Hello everyone- I joined this forum for the sole purpose of possibly someone having some info on a gun we got in our shop on consignment. Owner's widow had no information. Here's what we know: It's a Holland and Holland flintlock - 45" barrel- barrel mikes right at .74- on top of the barrel it's engraved "Abercrombie and Fitch 1776-1976 Set of Ten". There's a brass plate with the Roman numeral "IX" on the wrist- and that's all we know. There is absolutely nothing on the internet. Currently on Gunbroker # 921421728 to view pictures. we would like to get an approximate value we may be way off base at what we listed it at-we just don't know. I hope I haven't broken any forum rules by this post. ANY information whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. I'll try to attach some pictures. Thank you all very much.

Hi,
First, I have no idea of value. Holland & Holland are premier London gun makers but this gun does not reflect their quality IMO. I suspect it was made for Abercrombie and Fitch to sell in their stores during the American Bicentennial in 1976. Perhaps that gives it some higher value, however, it is a lousy representation of a long land musket from the Rev War period. There are many things wrong, the lock markings, the side plate , the forward ramrod pipe, etc. This was meant to sell to folks who did not know better. I would want to look at the inside of the lock. If it was well made, I might pay $900 so I could work it over and turn it into something historically correct.

The bid is now $6000 . I looked on the net and could not find a reference .
Dave . What can one buy a new great custom made completely historically correct Bess for ?

That's a Joke Right? That is manure being sold which is why it is called Gun Joker. I would spend the money on a Pedersoli Bess before that joke they are listing. They sell between 1200.00 and 1500.00 which is far more reasonable than that junk. Some idiot will buy it.

Hi Cutfinger,
I think a good custom made Bess would sell for about $2500-$2800 depending on what was used as components. The Dublin Castle Bess I made, which you know about, could easily sell for $2500, although that would never come close to compensating me. The lock work alone is worth $300 if I pay myself minimum US wage. The Holland & Holland gun shown above appears to be no special gun and historically incorrect. I might buy it for $900 if the lock was good and then turn it into a real Bess not a commercial gimmick trying to take advantage of a certain event.

Bootmotors,
Here are historically accurate Besses by someone who knows what he is doing.

Somebody wants a genuine fake poorly made repro pretty bad. if it's up to 6 grand. They see holland and holland and think O boy. Bootsmotors, you need to correct the advertisement if you're running a straight up business and have the gun-on-gun broker.

Yes, you all are way off! You should correct this if you are Honest!

Looks as if this is one of the 1776 Bicentennial muskets made by the Delhi Gun House --- which explains the "quality". The IX is presumably the ninth one of the ten offerred for sale by A & F.
As for the original enquiry, (" we would like to get an approximate value") it is whatever some ill-advised person will pay, sadly.

Holland and Holland. Ha ha don’t think so been studying it’s detail If you ask me it’s a replica gun made in India I was fooled into buying one in 1973 at auction £28 and I was only on £24. I have identical parts here in my scrap box. Haha. I am not the only plonker at 79. But I was fooled when I was 30 I kept it to remind me What a dick head i was. I chopped it up the other day for the action it was so crappy I got it working with epoxy. Whatever you do don’t try and fire it. Sorry but I am being 99.9% correct No !!!! Holland and Holland were not around in flintlock days. If you are not happy with my comments send photographs to Holts auction Norfolk uk. Haha. Sad.

Meant go say the trigger is made out of tin and spot welded together. So is the fiddly bit on the frizzen spring and gets the lock. Ha ha. I got some more bits somewhere

@bootsmotors, if you're wondering after this thread about additional details, I would urge you to contact Holland and Holland. They keep pretty good records, so if this was in fact affiliated with them they would be likely to know.
