I bought a DMAP doe tag for a two-day hunt for the late flintlock season. I have a friend that lives up there in Potter County.
Took off work Thursday and headed up at 4:00 a.m. in time to hunt at daybreak. Hunted most of all day Thursday and Friday.
We were mainly hunting state forest and while we saw deer, most of them were scurrying around so fast there was no shot opportunities.
I told my buddy Nate, I just need one to stand still for 5 seconds within 75 yards....
About an hour before dark this evening, we left a spot to call it a day.
While driving back I looked in a bottom and saw a doe feeding.
Whipped it back around to where we just were and eased up the creek bottom.
There were some spruce trees that allowed us to ease in there without being seen.
While I knew pretty well the area I thought her to be in, I couldn't see a deer.
I crouched low behind some goldenrod and continued.
I then saw the white outline of a tail. She was feeding directly away from me about 70 yards.
I slipped in closer and closer to get to where I could get a better shot.
Looking down at times to get close when I looked up she had me made.
The front leg stumped into the ground, you know the typical thing they do! I had the cock back and shouldered quickly.... Settled on the crease and squeezed.
When the smoke cleared 2 tails bobbed away.
I told Nate she was toast.. But could I be sure?
I certainly thought I was, it felt right, I was solid on her when it went off.
Sure enough 52 yards there was hair, then blood then good bubbly blood.
She only went about 75 yards.
4:25pm, and I just killed my first Potter County big woods deer with a flintlock, with only minutes left in the calendar year.
That's 4 this season for the new .45!
Ol Leroy did it again!
Can't get enough of this stuff, the history, and heritage... It all runs deep. God's blessing into a new year. Have a happy new year you all!

Atta boy Brian! Beautiful all the way around. Looks like your ball found her ten ring. I recently found your channel and quickly subscribed!

Thanks for sharing and happy new year, Skychief.
Hey thanks a lot for that! My content isn't the best but I try to put a little something out there.
I sold that trade gun this week to my boss but I bought all the parts to build another. I still need to try your shot load!

Excellent Brian.
Got to ask, how come one photo has snow and the others don't? Was you on the snow line?
There was snow when I got there Thursday AM, it was mild and with that snow meeting that warm air, it had a dense layer of fog. By late Thursday it was pretty well gone, and most the pictures I posted were from Friday.
I wish we would have had snow the whole time, brown shows up good on white!

Got it. We have gone from cold to really mild in the UK too.

Great job on the 45 and the hunts. Your freezer must be happy!!
Ha, my wife is, we literally just went to my income only. (Her last day of work was Wednesday).
Kiddo #3 is due in March. She told me to shoot as many as I can, and Ive been fortunate to fill almost all of my tags.
