I didn't see that, thank you. I looked at it and it is only on one side and I can't tell if it's a crack or a flaw.
Is that a seam between two pieces of metal? Lots of shotguns have a top rib joined near the action. Usually doesn’t show itself until it has been stressed.

It's the slot that the cock rides in.

A top plate is made separately, and usually screwed down over the top of the boxlock action

Ok you’ve got me confused. If it’s a purposeful fit, then it’s structural. If it’s a crack due to metal age, then…I’m not trying to be difficult, I’m trying to understand people who know more than I do.

IMO, it shouldn't matter much...….
It seems unreasonable to expect a 200 years old item to be perfect; so it is what it is - if the price is right for someone, they should considering buying it.
