I got this gun off the internet for a very fair price. Overall everything fits snuggly and it has little wear.

The barrel is 39” long and held in place by small screws through oversized thimbles (they are ½” dia. so my guess is these are off a musket).

The lock seems oversized for the gun and my guess is that the hammer has been replaced as it takes a 1” flint to make contact with the fizzen. Overall the trigger and lock are crisp, but the hammer seems to be incorrect as it barely makes contact with the frizzen.

The tang bolt finishes in a threaded hole in the front of the trigger guard. As I don’t have the jags I can’t determine the quality of the barrel. Based on what I can see the rifling looks okay, but as the ramrod is too short to get a good sense of the fouling and rust in the barrel.

Do you think I can repair the lock? If so, where should I ask about replacing the hammer? Should I try to make repairs or use the parts for a new gun?

Was this a kit ? the lock looks unfinished , the The tang and the barrel flats don't seem to fit properly , That type of frizzen spring indicates an early style of lock , any marks or names outside or inside the lock , That looks like a huge chunk of flint, the more you can give us on marks , a pic of the whole rifle from both sides ,the more we can help

I bought as-is from someone who doesn't shoot black powder. I'll take a few more pics

As per my previous post, please see some better pics. Please notice the offset between the lock and the frizzen - and oversized flint is the only way for this to make a spark.

By best guess is that the hammer has been replaced. What is the make and model of this lock? If I know that I can see about a replacement part.

Thanks - Scott.

When you look at the barrel/tang junction the join looks like doesn't quite match up The barrel is high on the left side and low on the right , The lock has never been cleaned up and polished inside or out , , it is still showing casting marks on the frizzen , which makes me wonder if the frizzen has been hardened properly . I'd say this definitely is a kit gun which has been put together by someone who did little or no work in it , The lack of work on the lock could be the cause of a poor spark . I doubt if the hammer has been replaced , it matches the rest of the lock in it's lack of finish and detailing
