that is fine as long as you are not an employee in the plant when a catastrophic failure happens. lives cost $ & are not replaceable. jmho.
People work in high risk occupations every day. It is a choice which hopefully is reflected in their pay.

But if you would like to know how such a catastrophe might look, follow this link to a dynamite plant explosion which occurred near here in 1906.

anytime I opened a can of Pyrodex there was a pack of dessicant in it and also american pioneer powder

I have been shooting Pyrodex since the late 70's and I have yet to find a dessicant packet in a can. Is this a new thing? I have only limited experience with the American Pioneer powder, 1 can but I don't remember it having one either. Though if it would have prevented clumping it would have been a good idea, the AP powder clumped up badly after opening.

Well memory can play tricks. Actually you got me curious enough to go check. I bought several cans when wally world had their end-of-season clearance in Feb. 2020 and hadn't opened any yet. So I broke the seal on one and checked... no dessicant. The modern cans are sealed better than the old ones though, when I first started using Pyrodex they sold it in a round cardboard can with a simple plastic plug in cap. I actually still have some that got mislaid in a move, only found it when I decided to clean out a corner of the attic a while back and was checking what was in boxes. Shot some of it and it still worked fine so put it in my stash with the newer stuff.

glad it went off for you. I was not shooting ML when they put Pyro in carboard containers. when I got it the Pyro was plastic bottles with metal screw on lid

No matter what brand or smokeless or black powder I have, I buy dessicant packs to throw in when I open a fresh container. Also kept in controlled environment. It may be over kill but I try to take care of it the best I can

good system you got all your bases covered

One more time with regard to Pyrodex and the other brands getting shut down. The following from the official statement:

Effective immediately, Hodgdon Powder Company, Inc. has made the decision to cease manufacturing operations at the company’s Camp Minden, Louisiana site while evaluating strategic options for the black powder business.

They do next expect any impact on their other categories or brands as the only location which produced black powder was the Camp Minden factory.
glad I am not the only one experiencing this. let me know it the desiccant pack work's?
Actually you'll need to experiment for yourself. I no longer use 777! And I won't use Pyrodex!

what can you tell me about these powders ? Pros and cons
Huge Con for me.

They do have a shelf life and expire.
Old powder starts to degrade and clump. Its not moisture doing it its the degradation of the powder. Unlike black powder thst clumps, there is no cure.

Also running extensive tests with all of them in all sorts of weapons and some cartridges, the cheapest black powder still out performs them.

Then cleanup.....these are all highly corrosive. Unlike black powder where we basically just need soap and water then a good oil......these need extensive cleaning with products as used in modern smokeless powders.

I dont use pyrodex but T7 is definitely more powerful than most black powders, based on extensive testing and years of personal use. Lots of test results showing the same can be found all over.

While ive heard plenty of folks say that pyrodex is more corrosive, T7 is less corrosive than Black or pyrodex. And is just as easily cleaned with just soap and water. While there is at least one sub powder that requires chemicals to clean, as far as my experience, T7 does not require different cleaning than real black

if any one is looking for pyrodex I have a manure load of it I would trade for black powder

gundoc

I got my first muzzleloader in 1977, a Charles Daly/Investarms Hawken. Paid $69 for it, and the store included a box of balls (.490), dry patches, and a tub of "Black Powder" (Pyrodex RS). Put Crisco on the patches, used a .45-70 shell as a measure, and proceeded to go kill a bunch of deer. Didn't know anything, complete newbie, and no internet. Thing is, I never had a problem, and was completely unaware that I wasn't using "Real Black". Just used that combo for many years, killing much game, including many head shot squirrels. Just cleaned my rifle after shooting, and slathered it with 3 in 1 Oil (The horror of it all!). No problems, still have and shoot that very rifle to this day, rifling looks factory new. I've gotten more sophisticated since then, moved on to flints and "Real Black", and more authenticly styled rifles and smoothbores, but just sometimes yearn for a simpler time. Don't know why folks get so upset about trivial things, Pyrodex vs. "Holy Black", Crisco (great for revolvers too!) vs. some exotic lube concoction, linen vs. pillow ticking, etc. Do what satisfies you and makes you happy.

No question about Pyrodex being caustic ..have shot it since it's introduction many years ago ..
That is until I found 777 3F.. Clean up is as simple as cleaning an unmentionable ..
PLUS forgiveness is great .....
Yes 777 forgiving when I do stupid ..a while back I had been out shooting two Colt open tops prior to leaving for the east coast for a granddaughter's wedding ..I set aside my range case with the two Colts in it to clean that evening(both fired 777 and factory percussion caps) ..emergency call to grandma from Virginia ..wedding dress needs a seamstress ..so we head out right away ...(I remembered the uncleaned Colts half way to Virginia)
6 days those two revolvers sat in that case in my basement ...I dreaded opening that case when I got back ...
NOT a spot anywhere ..I deserved to get two lumps of rust but instead I got a break
I am not advocating clean when you want ..even with 777 one should clean in a timely basis as though it was black powder ..
I also would point out I load paper cartridges and have absolutely zero problems with ignition of the 777 thru the paper with homemade percussion caps made from cap gun caps as well as factory percussion caps (cap gun caps are corrosive ..modern day percussion caps are not corrosive)
