As I am awaiting a part for my Pectonica Southern Mountain rifle, I got started building one of the .54 Cal Colonial Rifle kits I ordered from Kibler Longrifles.
At first glance I thought it was the Curly Maple one I ordered, with such beautiful figuring throughout the wood. Then I looked again and scratched my head- it sure looks and feels like Cherry! Could this be a rare Curly Cherry stock? I cant bring myself to believe it, but I am trying...
Needless to say, this will be a striking rifle!

I’ve not worked with Red Maple before but have so with several other species of Maple (primarily Sugar and Broad Leaf). It has the exact color and texture of Cherry and works the same as Cherry. It is baffling to me. The end grain really doesn’t tell me much either. Probably will call Jim Kibler and ask which wood he sent me. Katherine had told me before they sometimes get unusual wood ( like the Birdseye/Curly Maple combined one they chose for one of my earlier builds.
My guess is Cherry but I have been wrong before. Nonetheless it’s a beautiful stock!

Wow, that has a wonderful grain and look, can't wait to see it once it's done. Your really out doing yourself with all these guns....good for you!

Well, my guess is going to be Cherry. But anyway I am thinking at this early stage that it will be finished by only getting a BLO treatment to enhance the color even more and then sealed with a varnish.
This is how it looks compared to a rifle in Premium Curly Maple that I am working on. (I lightly wet the forestocks in the picture with water.) Would Red Maple be that dark?
