Recently purchased a large white powder horn from Track of the Wolf. Cannot get the fill cap off for the life of me. Any suggestions ? Vise grips wouldn’t even budge it!

I think you’re right. For what I paid I expected one. Now I’ll have to order the large brass plug and bushing and cut the finial off the butt plug!

Thanks 58 cal. but I’ve already ordered the parts to upgrade the horn. I’ll do more research before my next purchase. Just made sense to me that there would be a larger plug in the butt of the horn for filling than trying to fill it through the tiny opening where the ebony plug goes.

I knew I had a shot of this method.

I don't think very many horns actually have the option of filling from the butt. However, if you get the 3/8" bushing, the threads should fit the flask funnels made by Treso and Pedersoli:

I bought a 3/8" bushing, and it fits the funnels I have, but I've never gotten around to installing the bushing in a horn. Most of the time, I roll up a sheet of printer paper into a large cone like a dunce cap, scotch tape it to keep it from unrolling, make sure there is a little opening in the small end, and poke that in the opening in the tip of the horn to act as a funnel. It works well.

I also have a few of the old Goex cans ( not the plastic bottles) and I bought a cap for these with a spout on it. This screws directly onto the can. I think somebody finally started making a similar cap for the plastic bottles, but I don't have one yet. The little spout makes it easier to control the flow when you are filling your horn.

In my last annual Medicare exam, I was seen by a young resident who kindly gave me a couple of the little black plastic tips that they use on otoscopes, for examining your ears. I thought these might make good powder horn filling funnels, and for once in my life, I was right about something. They work very well.

I have seen images of a couple of old horns that had coarsely threaded wooden buttons for filling through the base, but these were uncommon. Most people, then and now, figured out some way to get the powder in through the spout.

Best of luck to you!

Should have done more research on original horns. I already had one I inherited from my brother that has the brass plug and bushing. Just made a wrong assumption they all had fill plugs in the butt.

A fill cap in the butt is not really needed. Sometimes the channel in the small end benefits from being opened up a very small amount though.

I keep my old Goex cans. I cut a hole in the top and soldered a cut off 223 cartridge to it. Works great to fill a horn or pour into a measure with zero spilling or mess.

never tried the .223 trick, although i can't see why it wouldn't work just fine ... always used a bit of printer paper rolled into a funnel.
