How do? I just acquired some veg tanned goat hides and want to make a few shooting pouches and age the leather up and use Native American decorations on them. But I need help on the aging processes, and any ideas or pictures would help. Thanks in Advance, Geo.

I aged this buckskin via wiping it with a brown fabric/leather dye, wiped off as soon as I applied it.

This is another part of the same hide, unstained/undyed

Use it. My last goat hide bag I used no dye. Just low heat and mixtures of Track of The Wolf's mink oil, neatsfoot oil, and beeswax. Color came out great, and it doesn't the much use for goat hide to get marked up and aged. I already had to do a little repair stitch at the buttonhole where the edge of the button cut into the side of the hole.

I've found the goat leather to not be as tough as some claim. Might be tough in some ways, but, once it gets cut or tears, that cut or tear wants to keep going. But, maybe you can work that to your advantage in aging your piece.

Not sure how well you can see the tear here,

But you can see the couple of stitches I put in to try to stop it. Then I added the buttonhole stitching to try to keep it from happening again. This does give a good example of the coloring I got without dye.

Goat skin may be too frail to work well for most accessories items or pouches.
But if you use cow veg tan leather..... spray-on oven cleaner will do great job at making veg tan look ancient and weathered.

Did you neutralize the leather with a vinegar/water solution after you used the oven cleaner?
