I've made several tomahawks before with cutouts in the blades and decorative hafts but I'm looking to do one with engraved brass plates on the head. My question is what is the best way to attach the plates to the head? Which would be stronger silver solder, brazing or screws? This would not just be a wall hanger I would want the plates to be able to stay in place even if thrown.

Andy, I have done a few with silver solder, I do throw them and haven't lost an inlay yet.

the sun is brass, the moon is silver. Maybe a little polishing is in order.

Very nice looking hawk Robby. I really wasn't thinking about inlaying the brass but doing a surface mount on the portion of the head where the halt goes through. Here's a hawk I just cleaned up for a buddy he had two Blackhawks and the deal was I clean one up for him and get the other one for myself. Those Canadian heads are as rough as a cob and not well-tempered. I ground, heat-treated, and tempered the blade. Then fitted the haft and striped it. The one I will be doing for myself will be a bit fancier. I've already ordered a premium maple haft and am in the process of cleaning up the head. The brass medallion I'll cut myself and have engraved with my initials. Here's a shot of where I intend to place the brass, the hawk is the one I just finished.

I think with a surface mount they would be prone to being torn off, inlaying isn't that difficult and aside from being more secure they look better.

Very nice and that is essentially what I had in mind. If I may, how do you cut the steel for the inlay? I don't have a milling machine but could get some end cutters to use in my drill press.

Little chisels of different shaped tips, formed from concrete nails and re hardened. Just a random google and these came up.https://www.amazon.com/Carbide-Engraving-Watchmaker-Jewelry-Graver/dp/B01MRBH8FN/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=gravers+for+metal&qid=1616762831&sr=8-3
If your not interested in making your own, a set like this would probably suit your needs.
