i put them in the campfire today. they were glowing hot. no breakage. the photo looks like they are black but they are light and dark brown. i put them into the sink full of water, if the firing worked they will stay together, if not the water will break them apart. i got my fingers crossed.

did you put them into cold sink water when they were still hot? and how did you handle them when they were still red hot? BTW, they look great. KUDDOS, to you!

they were cold when i sunk them in water. i only did this to make sure they fired properly.
they are fired good.

the pipes had sat for a few days to dry before i started firing.
get a small fire going and warm up the object to be fired, they need to slowly warm to over 212f, by this time your first little fire will be burnt down to coals, set them on a brick or rock in the coals, don/t bury them, and build a hot fire around them. that fire only needs to burn out after maybe 20 minutes., let the fire burn out without touching them. as the coals get cooler and the start to cool i moved them a bit more away from the heat, slowly. they have to cool slow.

like i said before im no expert Mr Google has lots of ideas out there.

i dug the raw clay out of the bank at Stink Dog Creek, cleaned it, added sand, made the pipes in my hands and went back to SDC, built the fire and fired then. 100% home made.
if you need a pipe or other clay object on your quest across the frontier give it a try.

I have some ball clay and would love to make my own traditional clay pipes.
Unfortunately, my lungs just can't take being around tobacco smoke.
I'd love to know how they compare to my old briarwood pipe.
I think tobacco these days is much more harmful than 100 yrs ago. Today it is one of the more popular internationally traded commodities and is produced with all the help modern chemistry can provide. Also the government mandates the addition of other chemicals to effect burnout time and more. Can we still grow our own? Is it a federal offense? Can I do hard time, again?

Buy your tobacco from a tobacconist as bulk tobacco. Good pipe tobacco is almost nicotine free, and good pipe tobacco shouldn’t be inhaled.
US surgeon general found pipe smokes out live non smokers by three years.
Healthy tobacco smoking???? I don’t think so. But good to develop type B personality and that’s what saves folk.
I would like to see how traditional front stuffers compare to avarage folk as we tend to be B

That makes sense. I can't see a type A personality having the patience for muzzle loading.

The two U.S. federal agencies that regulate production and sale of tobacco (FDA, BATF) say it's okay for a homeowner to grow all they want. But not sell it.
Splendid job on the pipes, old ugly.:thumb:
does that apply to POT??

Federally no. But permitted on limited bases for personal use in several states. I’ve no use for pot heads , but I can’t see to many police wasting time with a guy with a few plants and grow bulb.

Clay pipes with a clay stem if clamped in the teeth you get enough to bits of clay off to trigger a dirt taste with your smoke. It’s not like eating dirt but it the taste off raw veggies.
Reed stems taste like a meerschaum, no noticeable flavor. But as it gets just a little cake you get a woodsy flavor. I smoke an English blend and find it very tasty in clay.
Willow Bark, sweet grass, cedar bark and a bit of cedar ( juniper) leaf, prairie sage, and clover leaf dried and chopped fine, makes a nice kinninkinic for them what’s can’t take tobacco... but be like Bill and don’t inhale. Just a mouthfull of smoke rolled around and blown out.
I'm smoking right now as I write this and and can breath normally with a mouth full of smoke.
You guys are making me want to pick up my pipes again.

The amount of available nicotine in tobacco is partly determined by the pH. A high pH tobacco has more available nicotine. That is how tobacco companies manipulate their nicotine levels.
There is enough nicotine in a typical cigar to kill 3 adult men, but it is not all in the potent form.
I enjoy the smell of a good tobacco enough that I have used it as incense, but it is the nicotine that we smoke for.
You can grow and process it yourself (I have some in my yard now) but by the time you are finished you would have been better off just buying something decent from a tobacconist.
Personally I prefer a good VaPer myself (Virginia perique blend).
My favorite pipe is a homemade all wood one, ugliest pipe ever, but smokes great.
