Laid the rifle on the table, turned my head and pulled the trigger. Thought about this for some time before doing it. My lgs was not open that day, and I didn't know how I was going to get it out myself. So crossing my fingers hoping for the best. Turned out ok. Target shooting so my charge was low. Don't recommend this practice.
I am so glad that it turned out for the best. sometimes you just have to do it. I had a friend at the range that loader his gun with a load of powder and pushed in the ball down it stuck 1/2 way down, and trying to use the ball puller / screw, in to remove it , it broke. now we had a conundrum,!!so as you did he said to shoot it out, I said it is almost guaranteed to blow the barrel. he said to go for it. I put it on the ground 10 feet in front of the bench, put a cap on it, a legenth of clothes line on the trigger, and pulled the trigger, well that was one helluva blast, but upon inspection it held!!!!. so some time we do get lucky. as he said it is of no use to me as the way it is so, GO FOR IT!! toot.

I took a fellow reenactor to the shooting range today so that he could try out his new smoothbore flintlock fusil. He is new to muzzleloading guns and especially flintlocks, so I was instructing him on the loading, priming and firing procedures. As it turned out, we had quite a few misfires and were doing a lot of trouble-shooting and trying to get the gun to fire. I changed the flint, then I flipped the flint, changed priming procedures, etc. etc. We finally decided to call it quits and maybe work on the gun a little, but we couldn't get the last load to go off. A DNR range officer with some knowledge of guns was watching us, and when I jokingly said "Anybody got a match?" he replied "no....but I got a cigar..." He went and got his lit cigar and I re-charged the pan. I asked him if this was safe and if he had ever done this before and he replied "Yep". I got into position and aimed at the target, and he touched the cigar to the powder in the pan. "Boom" Thus we avoided the whole ball screw scenario. That was my first Cigar Flintlock Shot.

Teaching me a lesson.
Been muzzle stuffing for decades, brought a pile of flat landers into the fun.
Every year they try some trick to get me to dry ball.

About 7 years ago I was loading on the trail walk an a bucksom lass walks up,
opens her top up and lets them fly.
I said , you know they sell bigger buttons over at the tents.

She blushed and walked away.

That was the last time they tried to get me to dry ball.
My record is still zero.

Give it time. It will happen when you least expect it.

What I want to know is this: How come stuff like this never happens to ME?

I bought a Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter (Basically a sporterized Zouave) and love it. It is .58 Caliber. I was out shooting with some friends and we got to talking. Meanwhile I was dropping powder down the barrel. I suddenly realized I had forgotten how much I had loaded. Well I figured, "Naw it can't be that much." and I rammed a patched ball down and capped it and knelt down and took aim. It went BOOM!!!!, I went flying backwards, and for a while I thought I had broken my shoulder. I had a black and blue bruise from my shoulder to my elbow and I couldn't lift my arm for about a week. Not sure how much powder I had in it, but I wager if there had been an elephant in front of me he would have dropped like a rock. After that I paid close attention to what I was doing. The guys I was shooting with laughed their asses off... Luckily this is the rifle that Val (Navy Arms President) took to Africa and used mega loads of powder and huge grain bullets to kill Rino's, lions, and other big game. So it didn't explode on me....

Our Civil war group in California was called by the ranger saying that a visitor was upset with our Confederate Battle Flag, (This was over 20 years ago) We removed the Battle Flag and put up the 1st National flag. The Ranger came back and thanked us for putting up a Betsy Ross flag
ROFLMAO Since all this Bull manure about the battle flag started, I bought a confederate grey baseball cap and got a 1st National flag patch and sewed it on the front of my hat. I have had only 3 people recognize what it is. Two were re-enactors and one was raised in the South by a "The South is gonna rise again" type family. His great grandpappy fought in the war on the right side of course. He is my Doctor at the VA.

My first experience to muzzleloading was around 40yrs ago. I didn't know anything so I got my expert cousin to help shoot the rifle. We had a crowd like me that didn't nothing about nothing. During this great demonstration as you guessed right no powder in barrel. Ole cus made sure everyone had their ears covered for the big bang which turned out a fizz. The laughter would hurt your ears and he never lived it down. No tools for ball removal so the day was over for us. Sad part my house was burglarized shortly after and ended my BP experience until not long ago. I now fear the dry ball experience will happen to me in front of a crowd.

COTNTOP, of course your dry ball will happen in front of a crowd. It usually does. It is no fun unless friends or co shooters are there to witness it and offer harassment and useless suggestions such as "did you forget the powder," or "powder, patch, ball."

We were having a demo at a fair. Shooting a thick wall filled with sand. Calvin Parton and I were both loading at a bench. Some smart boy yells indians comin’now what cha goin’ta do?
We, without any planing before hand, drew a pistol from belts and shot. Busting the same balloon holes just an inch apart.
Pat my self on the back here, I built Calvin's pistol.
