The Birchwood Casey choke tube grease I ordered is on back order, is there something “common” I can use in the interim? Quite a bit of automotive greases on my shelf

Anti-seize is the best, but if natural materials is your wish just use lard/tallow/bear grease/etc. All work just fine, assuming you are pulling and cleaning the nipple each time you clean the gun.

I like copper anti seize, but found something called gorilla grease that seems to work well.

The anti seize is something you can pick up tomorrow, you'd likely have to order the other stuff.

Ha ha, we all have a different answer, that is black powder shooting for you.

I use water pump grease but only because i have a big tub of it. I clean and re-grease the nipples after every shoot so realistically could use absolutly any grease!
I tend not to buy specific firearms greases or oils as they are overpriced and i liken most to snake oil.

I had an entirely different image in mind when I saw this thread title! That could be because I have never greased a gun nipple. What has worked for the last half century for me is to clean and lightly oil then screw them in with a minimum of torque. If only I had been told back when I started this sport that this was needed!

I cannot remember how many posts have been here pleading for help to remove stuck nipples. Has not been that long ago, someone had 6 stuck nipples which he could not get out.

When you have to drill one out and use an easy out, a dab of anti-seize sure looks like a good idea.

As long as someone doesn't wait a long time to remove them, they should be fine. I usually like to remove mine every other time I take them shooting or if it's been awhile I go ahead and do so. They need not be put back with great force, just need to be snug.

I did the same thing for years. I srarted using a trace of antisieze just because it makes it easier to remove. I pull the nipple with every cleaning. A well experienced shooter was surprised to find that i remove it every time it's cleaned. He insisted that the nipple should never be removed and that he never removes them, ever.

I don't understand that thinking even though quite a few people seem to. Naturally if you leave it in place for a long time, it's going to get froze. Nipples don't last forever and eventually need to be replaced. They think it wears the threads out but that should only happen if they are over tightening the nipple.
