I ran across a extra cylinder for my 58 Pietta Remington several years ago in the bargain room at Cabelas. When I got home it was a 36 although the box was marker 44. It was sold “no return.” I got it cheap enough that I decided to keep it on the chance I might find a 36 Remington at a bargain price. That brings me to now. I found a bargain priced Sheriff’s model 44 at a local pawn shop. It needed some work and now functions fine. The 36 cylinder also fits it and cycles perfectly. Now the questions.

I now have 3 1858 44 Remingtons. Two are Piettas and one is a Euroarms. The Pietta cylinders don’t work in the Euroarms.

Would you sell the 36 cylinder? Shoot it down the 44 barrel? Ream it to 44? Wait to find a 36 too? What would you do?

The Remington is not what I’d want in .36 cal so were it me I’d ream it to be useful or sell/swap it.

Just sell it. You would have enough in reaming it to buy another .44 cylinder from Cabela's. You could shoot it in the .44 but it would be a total waste of lead and powder. Of course if you need an excuse to buy another gun then you have one.

Just curious, what is the difference between the Pietta and Euroarms fit?

The Euroarms I have has a slightly shorter opening for the cylinder and a Pietta will not fit into it. I don't know if the cylinder was shortened and was installed if the timing would be correct.

From some reading there are a few that say to shorten the cylinder and it should work. Another got with Taylors and he sent the pistol to them, purchased an in the white cylinder from them. They in turn machined the paw lugs and bolt grooves to the specs for his revolver. Blued it and sent it back. Says they did not charge more for it. Might check wiith them.
