How Often Do You Remove the Touch Hole Liner

I do remove my touch hole liners at least occasionally when cleaning my gun barrels. I also recommend the use of an "anti-seize" compound on the threads when reinstalling it. That way if you actually HAVE TO remove it to deal with a dry-ball or other issue, it will come out without damage. Using a flushing tube that screws into the touch hole threads also allows me to clean guns with pinned barrels with no danger of getting water or solvents between the forearm wood and the barrel. A threaded touch hole liner that is removable is a real advantage for those of us who are less than HC.

I got the TOW flush kit but it does not thread into the touch hole. The rubber o-ring provides the seal; which does not work because it will not squeeze down into the slots on the liner.

Where did you get a flush kit that threads into the touch hole? Inquiring minds want to know:)

Old guns just had a touch hole drilled through the barrel. Liners only went in if the touch hole burned out.
I noted on the gun I built sans touch hole seemed slower. But I’ve never pulled a touchhole liner.

Not really sure anyone actually read the Op- he was asking about an easily removable Pedersoli liner.
.
"Dunno how you interpreted his post, but this is what I read. "How often does everyone here remove their touch hole liners in their flintlocks?" In my mind he is asking about any TH liners.
I never take mine out. They are stainless and permanent.
Flintlocklar:)

That is correct. I'm referring to the screw in touch hole liners like the ones below.

For those that pull their TH liners for cleaning; Do you completely disassemble your locks every time you clean your guns too? How about pulling your breech plugs?

I remove my lock but do not disassemble it. I scrub it completely with a toothbrush soap and water. Then dry and blow all the moisture out with an air compressor. After that, all I have to do with respect to the lock, is re-oil and replace in the gun.

Like Enfield said I rinse the lock and scrub with a toothbrush followed by oiling. I do not remove the breechplug nor do I ever expect to. I pull the TH liners on my Pedersoli guns because they are easily removable and the threads do get fouling on them making them difficult to remove if not kept clean. I view them as a consumable part like the nipple on a percussion gun.

I also don't get my panties in a wad over the way other people choose to clean their guns.

It's just one screw for crying out loud. BFD

I agree with you biliff. Personally I don't get my boxers (not a panties fan) in a wad over the way people on here choose to shoot or clean or do anything else. We are generally a bunch of old guys (sorry to you younger guys) who ought to be able to get along and express ourselves. Rant over.....:dunno::doh:

Some friends came over for dinner once. This was during one of the times that I was a bachelor. If I do say so myself, I'm a pretty darn good cook.

Anyway, one of the ladies asked me how I got my dishes so spotless.

I can't understand why the guys were laughing but the ladies were mortified at my reply.

All I said was that I let the dog lick the plate clean before I put it in the dishwasher. What's so bad about that?

The op was how often we do it.
I don’t . Looks like a lot of folk don’t.... but the right way to clean your rifle is the way you do it.
You know if enough people dress like they did the last time your team played and won they will win again right? :ghostly:

Well, I think that I'm going one more time for a bad shooter who doesn't care about his rifles...

In fact I don't each time disassemble all my rifles and almost four times the year for each rifle only...
Most of the time when I'm back home I put a a wooden toothpick in the hole of the touch hole and I wash inside with very hot water ou with Young's Parker Hale BP solvent with brushes, patches etc and make it dry and I put oil in.
After that I take off the touch hole, clean the hole and the threading, I put a new bit of Teflon (PTFE) and close.
I don't clean wit a tool with rubber ring because the touch hole is not all the time waterproof with this method (screwdriver slots)...
For the rest, with barrels with pins or hooks I take everything apart in order to change the waterproff grease between the barrel and the wood, that's all I do since more than fifty years and I have no oxidation and if I need it I can take it apart whenever I want and put a new piece of Teflon back to change the touch hole or change the grease between the barrel and the stock.

I know, I'm a savage and a brute, but I was born that way. :(

Its really a matter of choice, you’ll hear many say never and some will always remove them. Some folks remove them with every cleaning, some occasionally remove them.

Personally I only remove them if I’m going to replace them, sometimes they clog up or get corroded, and thats a good enough reason to remove them, otherwise if everything is working fine, I wouldn’t.

When removing them you should always consider that the threads could be damaged (mangled), so removing them every time you clean your gun is a risk to the integrity of the barrels touch hole.

Thank the Lord I was not drinking anything when I read your post. Still got tears I laughed so hard. I can just see the look on their faces.:ThankYou::thumb::cool:

Get the percussion flush kit with the same threading as the liner. I got one for my Pedersoli rifles, works great!

Good idea, I have the Tool Pedersoli for all my percussion rifles and it is easy to change the nozzle at the end of the tube...
An old touch hole soldered on a small tube and the thing is in the pocket like said my friend kangaroo...

TKS for the idea. ;)

I already had that flush kit. Took the touch hole liner out and it fit perfectly. Thanks for the tip.

I made my own with a 1/4X28 stainless steel bolt drilled through, and some aquarium pump tubing. Remember to put a weight on the "bucket" end.

There is no reason to remove the th liner for cleaning. I only remove them when there is a clear need for them to be out; ex. replacing the liner, removing the breech, etc.

How do you remove and replace your liner? I have a WL and regular 1/4 x 28 liners, they are flush with the outside of the barrel. If I wanted to remove them I would have to use an easy-out.How could I reinstall them after that?

There are liners out there that have turnscrew slots or allen keys to fit them.
The only flinter I have that I cannot remove the liner on is the Bess, which does not have a liner.
