I took the Pedersoli 20 gauge to the range yesterday. We didn't bust any clay pigeons but I wanted to see what it would do with the round balls.

The round balls were cast from a Lee double cavity mold in .595. The patches were .015" pillow ticking with beeswax/vegetable oil lubricant. I used 72 grains of FFFG powder; which is the same for the shot charge.

I shot off hand at some steel plates at 25 yards. I didn't have time to move the plates back to 50 yards as other shooters were ringing them with their C&B revolvers.

Using a center hold and off hand I was able to hit an 8 inch plate fairly consistently. People were looking at me like they had never seen a grown man giggle like a 3 year old before. Geesh! Some people have too much of a stuffed shirt attitude these days.

I forgot to add that I had to use a short starter for the left barrel which has a modified choke. I could start the right barrel with the delrin rod.

I must have cast almost 400 round balls before the Lee mold broke. I have mixed feelings about Lee molds. Some of them that I have work great; others don't.

In the Howdah pistol, I use the Pedersoli cast .614 round balls with 52 grain powder charge and the same pillow ticking. The rounds are tight but I get minute-of-tiger-head accuracy at 10 yards.

Those balls will only go down the right barrel of the shotgun and that's without any patch.

I also tried a couple of one ounce loads of 00 buck with the same powder charge at a 16 inch plate at 25 yards. It rang it pretty good but I could tell what sort of pattern it made.

So, I promise to get some rounds and pattern on paper to show everyone.

I have a Lee mould for my ROA that is about as old as the pistol - that is, 35 years. It's just fine.

I also have a .45-70 bullet mould for 405gr bullets - they are NEVER less than 413gr, so it's gathering dust.

...and so is the 500gr version that never yet cast a bullet weighing less than 422gr....

What powder/shot combination are you using for the 20 gauge?

Being stuck in "No Lead California" I had to get creative. 75 gr 2f Goex, overpowder card wad, 1/2 inch cushion wad, and 1 oz of Sphero Tungston 18 (
https://www.ballisticproducts.com/SpheroTungsten-Super-Max-18-7-15-lbs_jar/productinfo/STSS071/ ). This shot is harder than barrel steel and much heavier than lead, so I used a heavy duty shot cup ( https://www.ballisticproducts.com/TPS-20ga-2-3_4-unslit-wad-250_bag/productinfo/0722044/ ) trimmed to fit the shot load and capped it with an overshot card.

Here is a discussion about the hunts: https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/...ho-is-going-and-what-are-you-shooting.113969/

And about the shot: https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/spherotungsten-shot-anyone-tried-it.113788/#post-1556418

Great articles. Thanks for sharing.

I already have the Howdah pistol by Pedersoli. There was no practical purpose for buying it.

However the fun factor broke the fun meter!

Because the pistol is a 20 gauge, I’ve been tempted to get the Pedersoli 20 Gauge shotgun.

If I do that, I may take up rabbit hunting again. That means I’ll have to get a beagle.

I’ve owned lots beagles and they are the best dogs on earth. As some of you know the fun factor on hunting with a hound goes up exponentially when you got more than one on a cottontail’s scent. However, I don’t want to start training and cleaning up after a dog again.

Did I mention how much of a chick- magnet a beagle puppy is at the park? At my age I don’t need that. Besides they pay more attention to the puppy than they do me. The dog forgets his place and my feelings get hurt.

So can everyone see what sort of trouble a new shotgun will get me into?

I need help. Please talk me out of it.
I have a Pedersoli 20 guage as well...for 2 seasons used as my primary dove shotgun. Superb choice. Shooting friends love to watch me shoot in the distance...they see smoke then hear the bark. Buy it!
