The first time I bought black powder I paid $1.10 a pound for it locally. It isn't sold locally where I now live and I can't drive a distance to find it. Ordering remains the best bet. I used to be able to order Goex for around $12 or $13 a pound and Goex's Jack's Battle Powder for about $11.50. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

Bass Pro announced last year they would no longer carry real Black Powder, once it’s gone, it’s gone - they did not renew their license.
Friendship, Dixon’s and other ML shops that carry it should be supported locally- regardless of price.

You might want to think over the idea of going back to ordering on line.
Yes, I know, money is money and "a penny saved is a penny earned" but that dealer has gone thru a lot of manure just to be able to sell the black powder.
He had to apply for and get a license to sell explosives. He had to build a special powder vault to store it in. He had to deal with Federal regulators inspecting his store and storage area. He might have to pay additional insurance premiums. He has to keep records of his sales.....

All of this just to make maybe $6 a pound profit on something that might not sell over 2 to 3 pounds a week.

IMO, he's walked the extra mile by bringing black powder to your area so, he might deserve your business. In fact, you might want to thank him for going out of his way so people in your area can have access to real black powder.

Just something to think about.
I would gladly do so if I could buy it anywhere near me.

Know your state and local laws. Many have limits on what an individual can store and transport, even in the "free" states. In some cases, 25 lbs will put you way over the limit.

I'm in NY. I ordered 4 lbs Goex from Graf's, with shipping was less than what 3 lbs of 777 cost locally. But I'm limited to being able to store and transport only 5 lbs. and need to keep it in a wood box properly constructed and marked.

If you're in the North South Skirmish Association and go to Nationals in Winchester, VA, Back Creek Gun Shop is the go to for powder and caps. It's located at the exit to the Fort.

One of the benefits of being in a reinacment group is the price of black powder is cut in half, we get in bulk for the members for around $13 a lb.

My question is what grade? Quality? There is a "reenactor" grade that is fine for blanks but no so much for competition.

We use 2F GOEX, for various flintlock muskets and prime with it. GOEX is most commonly used by reinactors, Swiss has become more popular lately, but is slightly more expensive.

For my personal use, I set aside 3F and 4F for priming, I only carry 1-2 lbs of each, and it lasts me a few years.

Goex makes a "reenactor" grade that is the lowest grade. That's not "f"s but a powder that doesn't meet QC for something shooters would prefer.

we buy 2f powder nothing else.
Yes, but there is a "reenactor" grade 2f and a decent grade 2f and then there's Old Eynsford 2f, all Goex products, but differing in quality. It's like buying regular gas, mid grade gas or premium high test gas.

Is $25 a normal price at a dealer or is this guy a little high on his prices?

It's like $28 a pound over-the-counter, here. As Zonie mentions, the fees and regulations are piled high.
I go in with guys in a club, and we buy our powder in bulk. For me, saving $10 a pound adds up when you use at least five pounds a year, not counting what I use for hunting and target shooting.

BTW a "club" doesn't mean the organization needs by-laws nor incorporation nor membership fees. Any group of people can form a "club" for peaceful purposes...well as long as the 1st Amendment to The United States Constitution still stands....even though lots of politicians would like to declare the noise itself from firearms as "violence".:mad:

Last I bought was from Graf but that has been 6 or 7 years ago . They had by far the best price . Dixie was a good place to get it from while Turner was still living but they have gone nuts since . Last I bought from Graf was $11 for Goex and a few dollars a pound less for their brand so I got 25 lbs of each , Dixie wanted around ( over I think ) $20 per pound . I will never need to buy more as this order was in addition to the Dupont, Curtis & Harvey , and several other older powders which I already had plenty of . I still have 40 or so of the old Dupont oval cans my pap had when I was a pup and about that many of the last batch that they made .

I know what you’re talking about ... we buy cases of regular goex 2f or Swiss 2f.

the reinactor grade powder is ok just a dense grain between 1 and 2f and is closer to original 18th century powders.
