Here is what 1400 of the 458 grain, Lee 500 S&W bullets that I paper patch and shoot in my Hot Rod Renegades. I am adding a picture of one next to a 380 ACP for size comparison.

You paper patch bullets with lube grooves ? I thought they had to be grooveless.

Wouldn't they be oversized once the paper is added ?

What am I missing ?

necchi, The notes are how many to the container, date, and the hardness of the lead at the time of pouring. I am targeting a hardness on my tester of .038 to .042 on my Cabine Tree tester. that is between 6 and 7 BHN.

Any bullet can be paper patched. Some do better than others. I wrap the paper on the bullet and size to .501 to fit my guns. The lee 500 S&W bullet is a great bullet for hunting.

I harden them to 6 to 7 BHN. I determined that the Lee bullet was pretty accurate as a paper patched bullet with soft lead. After that I focused on hardness to shrink the groups. Then I tested those bullets on game. In the 12 years I have shot that bullet I have only found one. The shot was on an elk that was quartering to me. That one crushed the shoulder on the cow elk and was found in the flank. The Lee 500 S&W bullet paper patched is accurate out to 300 yards. I limit my self to 150 yards on the first shot on game.

Nice to see paper patching, great idea.

I live in Star, Id.

The original idea of Paper Patching wasn't mine. Paper patching the lee 500 S&W bullet was my idea. Actually I came up with that idea about 12 years ago. I have been using that bullet for hunting every since. Hardened to 6 to 7 BHN, that bullet has taken a pile of game for me and others.

What material are you guys using? Labels, special paper? How much larger do you go before sizing?

Use lube on patch bullet before sizing?

I have a pedersoli tyron creedmore with .449 bore im interested in trying.

I’m curious just how big that meplat is. Reading older notes on wide meplats (mostly the .45-70) it was stated that ~78% was the max one would want to go, that wider had a tendency to have the bullet change course upon striking the animal and that after 50 or 100 yds it was deemed inaccurate. Yet we see very wide meplat bullets such as the one you use and they don’t seem to have those drawbacks as they figured. Clearly you haven’t noticed this either.

My revolver bullets are ~83% and I have a .456” that weighs 285 grns I’ve wondered about trying.

The Meplat measures .403 or somewhere close. About 80%?

I have seen these bullets crush the shoulder of a cow elk on a quartering to me shot, and stay on tract to be found in the flank. I have shot deer length ways and they track fine even after breaking some serious bone.

I am wondering if it has more to do with wide meplat and length of bullet/weight.

Since that bullet is a GC design it kind of have a "boat tail design" The base is .450 Maybe that has some affect. All I know is for the last doxen years they have worked awesome.
