I love the Mowreys...have owned every model they made over the years.....The difference between the Indiana and Texas models is that the parts wont exchange...or so I was informed by the Deer Creek person.....

I have one I bought several years ago in steel. .40 caliber. I had a peep sight put on the rear, a Lyman tunnel on the front. I also had a small screw put the action to allow a long allen wrench into to adjust the trigger. I didn't see any harm in modification since it was a modern designed rifle. Oiled it up, put it away and never got around to shooting it. I actually forgot the Mowery made it. Thanks for the information. Now I need to decide what to do with it.

SPUR8 decided what to do with it. I am really enjoying the rifle. I did take it back to more primitive sights.
I did not know springs are available, This one could use a new mainspring, it does hit a bit light.
Where can I get parts?

Here’s the Mowrey Plains Rifle my brother built back in the late 1970s. 58 cal. He cold blued the barrel because he lived in an apartment at the time so he didn’t have the facilities to rust blue. The bluing has worn a bit in the last 40 years

Interesting difference in the posted pictures.
One has the tumbler with a boxy shape and not protrusion off the back
The other (like mine has) is round with a post off the back that engages the cover in what would appear to be a support role, supporting the tumble like a bridle does on conventional locks.
Can anyone tell me which is the older and which is the newer design?
Has anyone been able to find a serial number index with potential dates of manufacture?

My ca. 1990 Mowrey has the round post [supporting] tumbler, so I'm thinking it's not the earlier model (boxy shape). Btw, the earlier Mowrey's were made in Olney, TX and thought to be better made.

The gunsmith at deer creek didn't even know what a Mowrey is.
That shop seems totally lost in space.
They have a lot of cool muzzleloaders for sale, but seem to be in a vacuum on how to fix them or find parts if they are in stock.

Did they get sold recently or are you sure you were talking to the right company? I've dealt with them several times, most recently about 2 months ago. They have always known every part on the Mowery guns.

The tumbler with the round post that protrudes into the side plate were done because the other style would wear and become loose/unstable.

I've found the Texas made guns to be all over the place- both in style and quality. All shot great though.

I do think it pays to pull the nipple and let the hammer go down as far as possible to prevent spring fatigue on these guns for end of season storage. . Or better yet disconnect the spring from the tumbler and just put it back in place unattached. easy to do.

I do have replacement mainsprings for mine, but on the gun that had a fatigued (Indiana Made gun) spring I just took it out and re-spread it. It's stayed that way for somewhere around 5 years now, but I do detach for storage as mentioned above.

Kinda reviving this as I finally took a photo of the lock work of my Mowrey. This is the lock work of the one in my earlier post that my brother built from a kit in the late 1970s.

Sinner,
They pop up every once in a while on GB and this forum, although getting harder to find now.
I would love to find one in a larger caliber. The one I have is a 40 cal.
There is enough meat on the barrel to take it up to 45 but I think would be a little thin for 50cal.
It is indeed a very good shooter.

IL Rifle,
So I guess that makes mine a later version since the tumbler is round.
Thank you for the picture.
Does it have a set screw for the trigger let off adjustment? Just curious.
