Hello! I'm very new to black powder but I thought I'd share a loading stand I just built for my plains pistol. I had heard many horror stories about breaking the stock while loading so I supported the pistol by the trigger guard with a removable dowel. The grip clears the bottom dowel by about 1/4". I would appreciate any comments and suggestions

I like the idea and design but it seems like the pressure it would take to break the stock could also break the trigger guard. Maybe just the right sized block under the butt of the gun would kind of distribute the downward pressure?

The stand is clever. But I have to agree with the other guys about stress on the trigger guard. I would cradle the pistol as suggested. When it comes to the loading, I just pour the powder down my barrel. I hold the pistol in my hand when I run the ball down the bore. I never let my pistol stocks touch any hard surfaces during loading the patch and ball. I have never had an issue with stocks cracking.

I look at the stand as just a place to rest the pistol, an extra hand sort of.

I do like your wood work, beautiful.

Here are a few pics of a stand has a wide base for stability while thumping ball down the barrel this one I built for my patriot but I use it for others as well very strong and the felt in area where gun comes in contact and no damage to gun just to give you a idea or two.

I have seen TC Patriots with broken stocks (I was requested to fix a few of them) that occurred in loading stands similar to this one. Support needs to be directly in line with the centerline of the barrel (‘yellow’ arrow) and NOT on the butt of the pistol. Supporting only the butt while loading puts a lot of strain on the stock at the top of the grip and through the lock area (‘red’ circle’). You are basically forcing the butt towards the barrel, kind of like closing a book. The weak point is where the pistol grip joins the rest of the stock and through the lock area.

I appreciate your tip I've thought about that very thing just haven't got around to doing it, been using it this way for about four years so far no problem but it is something I should do! Maybe I'll look into it this weekend .I'll send a pic when finished.

Not being critical of your design. Just pointing out a way, at least in my opinion, to improve it. Many Patriot stocks have been broken over the years, and they don’t make them any more. Would hate to see you stress and break yours. Good luck with your effort to ‘redesign’ and add support for the stock.

No offense taken when I made this I had just completed my .36 cal kit gun and just thought that up real quick I wasn't super worried as the gun loads easy so I'm not thumping the ball down the barrel ! Btw can't believe how accurate that gun is !

It really would be a tragedy to break a stock on a gun. But to break a stock on one no longer being made would be a "double tragedy".

One advantage of a handgun is you do not need the super tight loads to get accuracy.

Agree. The most accurate ml pistol I have ever shot was a borrowed flinter for a special match. The ball/patch combo the owner provided almost fell down the bore. No thumping required. At the end of the day I was amazed to learn just how good a pistol shot I was. :)

Hey, Doug.

In #4 comment above, SDSmlf posted a thread link in which the "dirty dozen" chatted about building a pistol stand. I'm the fellow in that other thread that got the good help/advice from everyone, and a final "approval," on my first loading stand build. I've used mine several times now, and like having that added support in place for my Trapper pistol.

For me, I'd much rather be safe than sorry. So I agreed with the advice, and did all I could to lessen the chances of a broken grip.

BTW, agree with Doubledeuce's assessment of your new stand. Your wood work is indeed beautiful stuff. :thumb: I love any great-looking wood!

Do images exist of original loading stands for single shot pistols or revolvers? Are there loading "instructions" for the military's pistols describing loading stands? My dandy loading stand is just that but likely a far cry from period correct.

This picture shows the grip being supported by only the butt end of the grip. That's what I started with for my first stand build, but went ahead and added a support bar to hold the top of grip, too. Sure is easy to see in this photo how much of the grip is just "hanging" there and nothing holding it.

Here's what I found
