Totally round or octagon to round? With an O/R you can lay it on a flat surface with the top flat down and rub the muzzle end on some abrasive material to make a mark on the top center.

On my shotguns barrel I wanted to place a small front blade in the event I ever wanted to fire RB. After I mounted the barrel into the stock I took a thin sharpie and marked two spots on the centerline of the top flat(octagon to round bbl), then took a piece of string and taped it on the two marks then held the string straight to the end of the bore then marked accordingly. Worked well enough.

I use the tang bolt slot and the blade as rudimentary sights.
