It's EASY to forget stuff when it comes to muzzleloading guns, there are many items needed and there are almost as many steps to follow when loading.
In my case I loose track of what step I'm on if someone is talking to me.

Mean Gene, you hit the nail on the head. I never loaded without powder first until I joined a muzzleloader group and shot targets with them. True, I never have shot nothing close to the amount of what most of you fellows have, but I've been at it for roughly 30 years and it never was a problem. It really was a quick one when I was trying to listen and load.

I remember how happy and how stupid I felt when a friend told me about shooting out a dry ball instead of pulling it, pack some powder in under the nipple and set off a cap.

I pulled the breechplug on one of my rifles to get a dry ball out, I couldn't screw a ball puller into it. When I got the breechplug out I found out why I couldn't screw the ball puller in, they don't screw into an empty barrel breechplug all that well, no ball was in evidence. Senior moments are the bane of of us older guys existence.

Long time ago back in the late 70s or early 80s a late and very dear old friend had been
Experimenting with bullets in his new P-H Whitworth Volunteer when he managed to project the steel ram rod down range with a very painful recoil.
RAM RODS DO SPIN. When it was found nearly at the 100 yard back stop it had actually taken the rifling form and looked like an extended cork screw.

Make your own pullers, use a thin screw. The ones you buy will expand the ball so much it gets tighter.

I myself Identify as what ever keeps me safe and outta trouble, Working on getting nerve up to tell cops stopping me for HOV lane violation my German Shepherd passenger "identifies as a lesbian person of color"........ "So officer is this a racial issue or do you have homophobia?" Or are you concerned about her ROA on the seat next to her, it's not concealed??:D

Please start a bail fund.....(hey these days it should be a valid defense??).

Sorry Zonie but I AM SERIOUS, why cant my dogs fantasy identity be recognized? (with me enjoying the benefits) I cannot afford therapy, next thing ya know they gonna want her to pass a firearms safety class.

I got more to say but is slightly (lol) off topic. And once I get on board with supporting MLF ya'll can hear some true southern gentleman like ranting!!

I am pretty sure I shot my ramrod about 40 years ago by accident.

I was deer hunting with a friend on a snowy day about 50 years ago, here in the south the deer seemed confused as they seldom saw snow. My friend cornered some deer in a valley and took a shot at one with his Huntsman M/L. He knew nothing about loads or powder and stuffed way too much powder down the barrel and touched her off, on each shot his barrel disconnected from the stock and clip on forearm (shotgun like gun). He duct taped everything back together and kept shooting, missing every time. When he ran out of balls he poured at least 200 gr of powder down the barrel, shoved his ramrod down on the powder and took one more shot. This time his gun parts went flying in all directions, the ramrod missed the deer, he never recovered enough parts to put his gun back together again with his usual duct tape.

I saw what he was attempting and hid behind a tree when he touched off each shot. He had killed more deer at 20 years old than most hunters twice his age but was new to B/P. Head strong and youthful he didn't listen to advice like "you are going to blow your head off" and forged ahead.

I asked an old friend about him a couple of years ago, he had survived his youth, became successful in life and got old just like the rest of us.
