To those it may concern:
I am located in New Mexico and I am returning to the Black Powder lifestyle.
Currently, I am putting together, clothing, gear and a persona from the 18th Century.
Are there any others in NM that are interested in trekking, crafting, shooting and/or general discussion?
It would good to know some locals to compare notes with.

I would fit into your areas of interest, but I moved from NM in 1972....seems like more than 100 yrs. ago as I look back on it. I still have a lot of interest in the northern areas of NM where I hunted a LOT during my years there. If I still lived in that area, I think I would be almost living at the Whittington center. That area is very dear to my heart..

Stony,
I know of a place called Stoney Brook in L.I., a parallel to your handle! LOL
I'm still trying to learn the ropes out here on a lot of things, hunting fishing and trapping.
The ease of which I took for granted where I am originally from.
I haven't tried the Northern part of the state for anything yet.
Its all the traveling you have to do just to get anything done that bugs me a little.
I'm just trying to get some local people to sing out and possibly gather from time to time.

I'm in SW Coloradostan, might as well be NM. 1750-1790 is a favorite time frame of mine.
Hiparoo,
Good to hear from you!
We're covering the same period.
I've been slowly narrowing it down to a more exact time frame as I do more homework.
I have trimmed mine back to 1766, the last year of Pontiac's War.
Are you covering a South West 1750-90 persona?

For my SW kit, I focus more on 1830-50, I also volunteer at a CO fur trade fort, and that's their focus. For my earlier stuff, it's more a Middle Ground focus, with a Native influenced woodsman approach. I can trace my family on the French side to early Mobile,AL.

Impressive on the family background !!
What do you do at the fort?
When I was younger I was a Mark Baker fan, now, even though I read and watch his stuff I'm not sure of the approach I want to take exactly.
To explain a little better, I strive to be as accurate as possible but I wonder if somehow/someway that gets in the way of enjoying the life style.
Are you a trekker or hunter/trapper?

I often teach basic primitive/wilderness skills, fire starting etc. Big fan of Mark, and agree that there are some limits for some folks, but the main thing is to enjoy it as correctly as possible for me. And yes, trekker/hunter/trapper/woodsman.

So where do you draw the line when it comes to PC/HC?
Are you using converted long spring traps to run a PC trap line?
Do you trek with a "brigade" or a group?
Do you hunt in period clothes and gear?

Attitude is more important to me than drawing lines. Like I said, enjoy it as correctly as possible. I have done full immersion events, and I enjoy events where there's new folks who want to learn. I have a modern canoe, but for me the experience is close enough, for one example. Trapping is basically impossible here in Coloradostan, except for live traps. I mostly do things alone with my dogs these days, but also enjoy a group trek or hunt. I often hunt with period gear, guns, and clothing, or at times a combination of modern and primitive, especially on day hikes. I live on 100+acres of land, with access to more. I snowshoe with almost period snowshoes, and haul firewood with a tobaggon in the winter when there's enough snow. This camp picture was from a weekend doings a few years ago.

Agreed! As with most things in life, attitude is everything.
My personal boundary is that folks have to be getting into whatever we're doing because its fun and a challenge for them.
I'm still new to BP shooting but I compete in every match I can to learn more about myself, my guns and gear.
Love those snow shoes! I have a pair just like them but the webbings are synthetic.
Did you make those?
That's a project on my list although the chance of getting enough snow to use them is slim here.
Beautiful pic of your camp!
I envy your spread although as you mentioned, I don't envy the blueness of C'stan or NM for that matter.
I'll see what my season is looking like for trapping and give you a shout if you want to come down to run a line.

I'm in Texico. Just getting into all this. Got my first couple muzzleloaders in April. I'm working on making a possibles bag and I am about to start a Pecatonica Kentucky Pistol Kit.

I'm going to try to start a club in Clovis if I can find interest.

I currently run the local Cowboy Action Club.

Howdy Shane!!
I belong to the New Mexico Mountain Men.
We have an event coming up the end of the month in Edgewood, NM if you can get over that way.
I know its short notice but it would be a great way to dip your toes.
Its called Cache Le Plew and its what's known as learning rendezvous, which means its just as the name implies, a good way to get introduced into the craft.
Sounds like you're off to a good start with what you got going for weapons and accouterments.
Did you have a period that you were looking to emulate in particular?

I was up there not too long ago at the SASS world finals. I may be able to hop up there right before school starts.

I looked on Facebook and found only stuff from Cache Le Plews previous years. I'd like some more info, maybe a schedule. I tried to get info on a schedule for the rendezvous in Raton but the guy that runs the facebook for that was downright unpleasant, told me if I wanted a schedule he would post one in camp. So I didnt go.

My mentor was Booshway 10 or so years ago in Raton. He sold me his last muzzleloader today, an old Santa Fe Hawken.

I got hooked on these guns, I have nothing else other than his guns and kit. He had sold his clothes and stuff.

I saw on last years Rendezvous in Raton they taught how to make a fur hat, I'd love stuff like that. My health stops me from doing too much (colon cancer this last year). These guns are therapy for the soul.

Shane,
Are you talking the FB page for the NMMM?
Cache Le Plew is very much, like I mentioned, open to welcoming people to show up and learn.
I've seen many folks in modern clothes competing along side folks fully clad in period gear.
They are concerned in raising awareness to the lifestyle and interest in the craft.
I don't have a schedule of events but I will post the flyer and on it is the number of the Booshway, Cassandra, she can give you the run down.
Hope to see you there!!

I was at the Raton rendezvous a month or two ago if I can I will try and get the time they start! Also the Cache Le Plew sounds like a great place to get started again! I'm trying to get back into it by myself and a starting rendezvous would make me feel much more comfortable.
Much Thanks
