I just got back from shooting trap at our local trap range. Wow!!! what a blast I took my CVA SXS 12 that I got from the forumn. when I walked in and opened my case I had several men come look they were very intrigued. alls I had was #6 shot according to my measure I started out with a light load 1 ounce of shot equal amount of powder. at first I started with over powder card .5 cusion wad then over shot card. I was using pyrodex RS recoil was mild out of the 8 lb double not having much experience with a shotgun as for 35 years I just bowhunted, a couple guys followed me around giving me pointers. I managed to hit some I did better on the longer shots as my bore is borderline full/extra full. I let a few guys shoot it and they was knocking them down!!! the next round I had bought some RMC/oxyoke 12 gauge wads I loaded 2 0ver the powder and a over the shot card. I did a lot better this round still under 50% hit rate but I believe I can get better. ill be heading back in a few days ill take my go pro and attempt some video. I know one thing I love having 2 quick shots it the need be.

Fun, ain't it!
Save your #6 shot for the Turkeys. Get a bag of #7 1/2 or #8. More shot than powder usually gives better patterns. Once you figure out your leads you'll be powdering birds regularly.
Experiment and Enjoy!

yes sir 25 lb bag of 7 1/2 ordered

Trap is a game of knowing where to hold you muzzle on each station and a clean mount on the gun..... once you get that you should see your scores rise. The chokes you have will do fine. Try to keep your loads "square" (equal height of powder to shot. The best trap shooters in the world are bunker shooters and they only shoot 24 gm (about 7/8 oz of shot in a 12 gauge) Most American trap shooters will walk away crying from a bunker field...….

Good start on your trap shooting experience. I shoot both 12 & 20 gauge guns with 1 1/8 ounce of 7 1/2's and 3 drams of FFFg Goex (+/- 72 grains) I have found my best patterns come with 1 over powder card and 2 over shot cards and NO cushion wad. My 12 is a Pedersoli with 28" tubes and my 20 is an original Powell (1850) with 38" tubes.

mark are your barrels fixed chokes? im enjoying it. I definitely miss more than I hit but practice makes perfect

Howie,
Yes the 20 has fixed chokes and, I'm guessing, the right is cylinder and the left may be closer to improved modified. That is just an observation based on what it will do. The Pedersoli has choke tubes so it shoots almost like a cartridge gun.
