Our ancestors were lucky. They didn't have all these modern problems to worry them. They just swabbed out their barrels with whatever water they had and went on about their business.

The point of the discussion about water chemistry concerned rust staining that was persistent, not about whether or not it worked for removing powder residues. Water chemistry definitely does have effects on rust formation.

Never had a problem using my well water, dried thoroughly,and lubed with Lehigh Valley lube. Sorry its gone.
That's true, but we do have choices. The old ways are not always better.

POOR GUYS, They missed out on this swell forum too!
My point is that life is a whole lot easier if you don't have so many choices and that if you don't know any better way, what you're doing to get by is good enough. I'm thinking of back in the '60's and '70's when I didn't have to decide which website to look at or which cell phone to buy, or why I can't buy a plain old truck with roll down windows and rain gutters. Sure, the internet is a lot of fun and I have learned a lot on it but I still managed to have a lot of fun shooting my muzzle loaders and reading the magazines of the time. I'll give you the point about dyeing young back in those days. Modern medicine has kept a lot of us grouchy old bustards alive a lot longer and has given us a few more years to gripe about the way things are these days.

We all yearn for the "Good Old Days", I would think!
To be traditional you would have to be using a dial-up internet connection. Anything faster is too modern

One of my shooting buddies uses a novel approach - Lysol disinfectant wipes. Theyre mostly water soap, and isopropyl alcohol. cut squares, swab, repeat. I think he's even tried it as RB patches. YMMV

Really? Interesting?? Might have to look into this. Sure would be handy on a remote hunt.

We have these Lysol wipes in the house. They appear to made from non woven fiber material. Doubt there will be any natural fibers in it, and at best, the stuff is likely held together with a polymer adhesive. Haven’t tested if the wipes melt, but would not consider for a RB patch. Oh, and it specificity states on the package not to flush down toilet, as I had that discussion with the bride a while back. Just don’t see them being useful around muzzleloaders.

I would think the wipes could possibly work in the cleaning part okay but I also wouldnt try them as patch material. They are not biodegradeable
Would have to check label, but believe it said don’t use or not recommended for use on wood.
Ralph you have done nothing wrong, I use water and Dawn and sometimes a little windex mixed in with it. With all do respect I mostly view post and smart A## remarks from people towards folks that are asking questions is wrong . and they wonder why some have left the site. Im sure Ill catch hell, but I for one asked a question and was treated completely disrespectfully. enough said.
