went to one of my setups last night, This boar ive hunted for him every weekend since last year. he made his mistake at 2200. 22 yard shot at night with the led red lights.
I used my lyman deerstalker 54 with 535 grain no excuse bullet behind 90 grains of Olde Eyensford 2F. gave him about 30 minutes the started looking for him. very little blood. after 2 hrs I went home and and slept. I decided to give it one more try. got my gps first set of good blood was about 200 yards from the ground blind. I found him nearlr 400 yards away just as he was gonna give up the ghost he tried jumpimg the creek. im reslly pleased getting this one. the lyman deerstalker worked great. not happy how fsr he was when I found him. guess ill take a nap hunting pigs this evening. the game cam pic captured him just before I shoy

Congratulations, that is one big boar. Those pigs are tough.

Looks to be a heart shot. Is it a heart shot Howie?
Most critters run to a heart shot and the bigger they are the further they flamin' run!
Well done on finding him.

Great looking hog. Well done. Wish we had critters like that here in Ohio.

Great job following him up Howie. What do you suppose his live weight would have been?

Congratulations,
Mr. Skychief I have no dea what his weight would be other than im around 245 There is a formula I may use one dat to guesstimate you take the measurements of the chest than the length. if I was to give a estimate id say 300lbs give or take

No bullet comes with a guarantee, and no one can say you didn't use enough lead and powder. Just happens. No one can say ya didn't kill him, 'cause you did! Wow what a hog. Not surprised he could go that far, and live that long, with a lung shot. Deer, elk, or black bear would have been dead within fifty or one hundred.

Yeah that's a lot of pig...., :D :thumb: Wish I had a chance at a big piggy like that !

Ya know, (and I'm not criticizing your rifle choice nor your load),

...James Forsyth in 1867 would tell you that you need to use a patched round ball and at least 16 gauge as a minimum, in a rifle, for such critters. Coincidentally, and lucky for you.., Pedersoli makes the Kodiak Safari Express in .72 rifled, which is 12 gauge, and that's a 539 grain ball. So, this provides you with an excuse to get a new rifle! ;)

NOT that the old one is bad in any way...., :)

Well, a ball does have more "smackdown", but a slug more penetration...so six of one, half a dozen of the other. That "no excuse" bullet isn't an expanding slug, is it? I am kind of curious that a 535 grain slug, over 90 grains of powder, didn't penetrate all the way through...even on a hog named Titanic. If it is an expanding slug, I might re-think that a bit, and switch to a non-expanding one. ?? Just a thought...he's certainly not any less dead at the moment.

No, did a google, it's a good, solid non-expanding bullet. Wow those pigs are tough! But still not surprised.

For those of you who wish you had these feral pests in your area, be careful what you wish for. They are destructive and compete with turkeys and deer for mast crops.

As Garth Brooks sang, "Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers."

yes sir I own a pedersoli Kodiak double .72. im working it into the mix. the roundballs weigh about 500 grains and the rifle shoots well for the range I hunt. ive also shot some 1,000 grain conicals out of it. although the twist is not even close to being ideal it would smack a hog well at the ranges I hunt.
im not agains roundballs I shoot them a lot more than conicals but for me starting at .58 caliber I notice more pass throughs. this whole last year has been dedicated to hunting pigs with a traditional smoke pole over 50 taken, 22 so far with patched round ball. starting with .54 and up I have no problem passing through sows or young boars, but when they hit the 7 yr old mark with massive front shoulders thick hair and mud that is like a brick, the layers of fat then into the vitals and out the other side I prefer a heavy conical. ill continue my quest hunting with a patched round ball some but im getting close to bringing out the .72. ill have to shoot it at night and see how it shoots with a front white sight and my red led headlamp

I agree. Kansas spent big bucks a number of years ago to eliminate feral hogs.

Great boar Howie,

I have never seen the like of the pig crop this spring. Lots of piglets. I bet I had close to 100 pigs in front of me last evening on my son’s place in Lee county. None weighed over 50 lbs. I bet there was close to 80 tiny piglets all together.
