@feamir pretty much everything here has to be held on a Firearms Certificate which is issued by the police. Compared to USA I guess you could say it is very restrictive. To initially have an FAC granted, you apply to police with all your details, 2 referees (who have known you for 2 years min) and you sign off authority for the police to access your medical records. If granted you then have the certificate for a period of 5 years when it must then be reapplied for. You must show good cause for issue. Each gun is added to the certificate with make, model and serial number.

@Colonial Boy yes that always gives people a chuckle that you have to go travel into the South to get to most Northerly part at Malin Head! Sometimes accompanied with lots of head scratching :D

Theres a whole lot of Texas to fall in love with. What part were you in? Also do y'all have organizations like the NRA or NMLRA in Ireland to assist the "common folk" in their God given rights to have guns? AND hey I'd rather have an Indian gun than No gun!

I would love to spend maybe 3 months of the year in Texas so have been looking at small holdings with a little bit of land attached.. prices are so good compared to rip off Ireland. I was in Fort Worth, Graham, Cisco, Abilene, Lubbock while travelling about. Particularly loved my time on a ranch near Graham.. cities are not really my thing.

The main organisation that would attempt (and I only mean attempt) to have a positive impact on shooters rights is the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). We also have the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain. Unfortunately this side of the pond.. firearms ownership is VERY much determined to be a privilege and not a right. God bless your constitution and protect it because god forbid you had to undergo the hardships here. One of our biggest problems is that the European Parliament and unelected bureaucrats in Brussels are enacting increasingly restrictive firearms legislation. While we sort out an exit strategy from the E.U.... these laws continue to be transposed into national laws. Rant over :eek:

rmn82,
Thanks for the info on Firearms certificates. I'm glad that we don't have to give all that info to the police like you do. I guess in ways we do give some of it when we fill out a 4473 to purchase a modern firearm. Although ATF dose not have a centralized system to use that info, they can request to look at any FFL's log book to see specific info about a person or a type of firearm. Interestingly black powder firearms are not considered guns and no 4473 is required to buy or sell. No paperwork necessary for private transactions of anything except machine guns and destructive devices (in Arizona).

I'm re-reading this and I find I'm guilty of the acronym sin.
4473= Federal form for the purchase of a modern firearm from a dealer.
ATF= Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
FFL= Federal firearms license holder.

Don't know what brings you to Arizona on occasion, but drop a line next time maybe we could shoot together, Feamir

@feamir i do like the sound of the Arizona firearms laws! Much less draconian than here. Thanks for the offer I’d be delighted to take you up on the invite next time I am over.

Things over there could be alot better, but I am quite pleased to see that firearms laws are as sensible as they are. I fear the day is comming over on this side where what they call "Sensible Firearms Laws" will be imposed. Afterall the line of thought seems to be "Who needs a gun anyways"?

Rmn: Never too late to say welcome. Next time in the States, poke around Texas' neighbor to the West, New Mexico. I think you'll like it.
My Irish connection is Quaker relatives named Wilkinson from Ballymoney who came to the Colonies about the time we turned out the king.

Well howdy from East Texas, what is referred to as the "Piney Woods" I see where you somewhat wandered some of what is called the Prairie area and even some the the panhandle. There are a few of us wandering the tall timber of east Texas (east of Dallas) Im sitting half way tween DFW and Shreveport Louisiana . Will be interesting to follow your adventures !!

Howdy from eastern Tennessee, mn82. If you ever get to Tennessee, I'd show you around the Appalachian mountains. Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear that you have such a time with all the forms and regulations there in Ireland. I'm glad and happy that I live in a great nation which has guns built into the constitution. I'm a Marine Sgt. and Vietnam vet and proud to own guns. I thought it was a joke that I had to take a pistol course to get my CCW license since I am a trained pistolero and killer by the USMC. Lol! My favorite is still my flintlock and cap 'n ball 1860 Army pistol. I even shoot black powder out of my Colt replica 1873 peace maker.

Good morning guys, and thanks for all the very warm welcomes. Sorry I haven’t been online in a few days to reply... been a busy old work week and one that has seen me travelling a fair bit around our green Isle (as tiny as it is :) ).

@fleener PM replied to.. thanks!
@Eutycus fear the day they bring ‘sensible firearms laws’ to your side of the pond... they may start out sensible but with every year that passes they add more and more restrictions... never less!
@BillinOregon that is fascinating.. I’d love to chat more about that. I was born in Ballymoney and went to school there!! My family farm is about 5 miles from the town. It really is a small world! Wilkinson is still a name that is in the area! I spent time in New Mexico last summer too!
@Baxter thanks for the welcome!
@SamTex1949 yeah was west Texas area. I did enjoy it but boy was it warm at the height of summer. I am keeping my eye open for small holding at moment with bit of land attached as I am interested in buying something there.
@WRustyLane thanks for the offer. I’ve never been to Tennessee but sure would love to explore it so would be happy to take up that offer! One of my favourite hand cannons is my Uberti Colt Walker.. never fails to bring a smile to my face!

Our Irish freind is right about that one statement. As enjoyable as Texas is only one word truly sums it up in summertime...Hot.
