Bannock is like bread, but thick and chewy. Very filling. Eat with butter and syrup, or jelly, or any thing you like. It can be made different ways. I use the Cree way I grew up eating. Flour, salt, baking powder, water, melted butter if you have it. Spread flat across an iron skillet if you have one, and put on the stove on a medium heat flip when it becomes firm enough. If you have no skillet you can spread on a rock, split log facing the fire or even wrap around a stick if you have no skillet, or no flat rock.

Thanks, i kinda thought it was some kind of bread but wasnt sure.
Thanks again

Little while ago I opened a can of spam to go with a bannock for my supper. Its not expensive, its tasty, its easy to fix. Whats not to like?

Save the can of Spam!
Slice a 1/2” bologna and fry in skillet and make a good traditional Pow Wow bannock, bologna and cheese sandwich :)

Bannock cooked on stick over hot coals is the best way to cook. With butter and Saskatoon berry jam :p

My mother in law and wife make gooseberry pie and jelly. That should be tasty on bannock.
Fried bologna or spam both are good

When the world goes dark. We will have cases of SPAM.
If you read all 244 posts you will be hungry for SPAM. !!!!!!

Most of the "objections" to SPAM outside of those who do not care for the taste, is the salt. Which was why I did the experiment of par-boiling before frying, to pull out some salt. Those with salt or nitrite sensitivity, beware, it will surely swell your ankles.

Speaking of recipes, I have been recently told by a person who grew up in Hawaii in the 1960's - 70's that "Hawaiian Pizza" made with ham and pineapple is "right out"! The "ham" should be standard flavor SPAM, as that's what regular residents of Hawaii had as a common meat to put onto pizza. Ham (even canned), I am told, was rather expensive.

Again, I found at a Market Fair when camping, when SPAM was sliced thin and fried, it made a good substitute for actual bacon, especially for situations without the ice to keep supermarket bacon cold, and compared to the price of air-cured bacon.

SPAM is still very popular in Hawaii. Long's Drug often has large displays of SPAM in their stores. By large I mean a pallet stacked with SPAM!

Spam should be reserved for the worst of sinners!

Once a young man told me he bought a horse so if the world turns to hell, at least he will have transportation. I replied, I bought a gun. I will shoot and eat your horse and there will not be a dam thing you can do about it because I'm the guy with the gun. I might share your horse with you, you may or may not like it...but that is how it is gonna be.

Spam may make good bait to bring in some other critter worthy of eating, but you should ask yourself before you partake of said critter. What is so wrong with it, that it would be willing to eat spam?

Threatening to kill a man's horse might put you on the wrong end of the gun.

Hot dogs, bologna and potted meat are gourmet foods compared to Spam.

waarp8nt I don't just like your post I love it. :D:thumb:

I regretfully admit I eat all of em (and anchovies too). But NOT Brussel sprouts. The Lord made them for processing into lubricant for space shuttle gears and such and they do indeed taste like it.

I won't eat anchovies on a pizza but must admit they aren't too bad for a fish otherwise. When we were first married my wife regularly seved brussel sprouts. I dutifully ate them without comment but after a couple of years I told her I could live the rest of my life without eating another one and she replied that she disliked them too but had been serving them because she thought I liked them.

A pan of crispy about the edges oven-roasted Brussels sprouts is like a bowl of peanut M&Ms to me. Delicious and you can't eat just one...

Log Cutter, you are really sounding like a real Trekker with your making bannock by the fire.

Youtube for all of you spam lovers.....

Youtube for all of us who think spam lovers defending their choice of edibles are nuts....remember Euell Gibbons?

Crazy thing about crazy food is you like what you get used to eating. I think most veggies are what food eats. However:
Back in the 80s I tried the pritican diet plan, extream low fat diet. Almost vegetarian, And an unhealthy lack of fats. Hated it to begin with, but after a couple of months it all started tasting pretty good. Real food still tasted good, but I was no longer craving it. I was a good boy stayed on it for a year or so. Over time I grew to like navy food, and was in the Philippines and after a short time really liked food there.
Try cutting Brussel spouts up and frying them with a little bacon, or a dribble of balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
Or warped in bacon and broiled.
