I've got a 54 GPR. I have two cleaning/loading jags for it. One is a lyman 54 caliber jag and the other I bought from TOW. Anyways there is a noticeable size difference between the two (diameter). The larger one is from TOW. Is it normal for jags to be such different sizes even though they are both 54?

Will it fit in your bore with a patch? I had a .54 that could be used in a .50 with thin cotton patches, in a .54 with thicker flannel patches and a .58 with old denim.
I think it’s just who cast it and who put it in what box.

Yes it's normal for there to be a difference.
But the difference only matters to each individual as he learns to use the jag. Each manufacturer's jag may have different characteristics. You may find one or the other style suits your technique better then the other.
It's actually a good thing that there are several options. That way each individual can find what works best for him.
I prefer a button style;

Is it normal..??
Yup..sure is. "50 ( or 54)....ain't 50". That's just a fact of life in the marketplace.
The good news is that jag diameter is one of the easiest things to adjust that you will encounter in the universe of muzzleloaders. Find one that's a little bit larger than what you find "ideal" for it's purpose then just chuck it up in a drill and hold a file against it until you get what you need.

OK thanks guys. The larger one is the ideal size for my patch/jag combination for my between shot wipe when shooting black powder. I only figured that out after using the smaller one first, since that's the one I use for pyrodex. I started getting resistance while loading and noticed my patches weren't coming out as dirty as normal, so I switched to the bigger jag and it helped allot. I had never shot black powder before so lesson learned!

I have a certain jag I like to use for wiping and loading PRB. I have permanently affixed it to the end of my ramrod. It is not obtrusive and is always there when I need it. Works for me.

In my case, I had to go slightly smaller for the jag I use to wipe between shots. Using a jag and wiping patch combination that is too large tends to push a lot of fouling onto the breech face and cause problems with ignition.
