OK I'm betting these silly people loaded the piece with smokeless powder.

Here is a still shot of the piece from the above video

Cannon Explosion Still from YouTube video.PNG
Looks like the breech is blown but perhaps they did use black powder but just in an unfireable antique....finished off the antique while they were at it.

Wow!
I think it was overloaded and it was a lawn ornament. Not a real cannon. just a cheap cast knock off. The wheels even looked cast.

A woman named Alisa posted the video and wrote:

"We were very lucky! The inside metal rusted out causing it to blow up in pieces. Pieces were found up to a half mile away. The first time it didn't work we were all standing right next to it. Thank god it didn't go off that time. There really are angels watching out for us! We still have the pieces that remind us daily how lucky we are."

Someone asked if they were using smokeless powder but she never answered the question. Probably doesn't know the difference between smokeless and black.

I think the smoke is the wrong color. I bet they used a full pound of smokeless since it wouldn't have looked like very much for a cannon charge. That might explain why it didn't go off the first time - it's harder to light. They are very lucky and I wonder who used to own the cannon.

That leaves me with even more questions and no answers.

Rusted out ? sounds like a lawn ornament to me.

Right I hadn't thought about the smouldering of the fuze area, but just the smoke color. Yes I don't think it would've burned so slow had it been BP or a sub....,

This kind of stuff is what the cannon-banners use to convince congress persons that we're all idiots and therefore these things must be banned. The perpetrators were d------d lucky nobody died a horrible death. There are qualified schools of muzzleloading artillery that will GLADLY teach someone how to use these wonderful tools. There are competent schools of parachute jumping too. And mountaineering, etc. and all are wonderful hobbies that can kill you dead if you don't learn and heed the lessons. Some fella named Darwin defined it as natural selection, except for innocent bystanders. God bless us every one. George.

And the most efficient at helping his own species achieve room temperature. And, it would seem, eventually to create our own extinction with nuclear cobalt salted devices in spite of cruder efforts with personal weapons! Geo.

I have done my best to remove myself from the gene pool, I like a good loud bang and I will shoot anything. I have held 1640's iron against my face and pulled the trigger, I have lit a 200 year old cannon with a blow torch. Perhaps the secret of my survival is that all my nitro is in cartridge form and black is wondrous safe.

You are braver than me. During my years as a gunsmith whenever i rebarreled, barreled, or rechambered a rifle, I would have the neighbor kids shoot them, the little rascals love to shoot and therewere so many of them....

I doubt smokeless would ignite like that unless loaded with a projectile.
I also doubt it would be loaded thus in that environment.
It's a garden ornament for my money.
Remember:- idiots are very resourceful people!
