I am close to up your way and attend shoots at FIN FUR FEATHER gun club in CT. ever been there?

CT Shooter,
It can be difficult to find people to shoot or clubs/groups to shoot with in Ct and NY. Not sure where you are in Ct. I am in NY just across from Kent. Sharon Mt. has a decent shoot in July (burnt toe) and a shoot in Feb (frozen toe). Biggest problem in our area is finding a place to shoot. I have heard that the Original Northeastern Rendezvous is going to be held in Goshen Ct. this year.

I heard that about the Goshen Rendezvous and I hope it is true. It used to be a great get together. By the way Rabbit, are you going to the Shandaken Primitive Biathalon this year?

Grimord
No I do not plan on attending. I never have attended before. Have done any Rendezvous in the last 10 years, health issues. I have gotten rid of most of my equipment. I hope to make the Northeastern in Goshen for public day.

CTShooter, I am probably closer to you than I am to Baltic, Ct. (but you don't say where you are in NW Ct.) And I drive to Baltic several times a month throughout spring thru early fall for modern shooting events there. It is a small state. And if you wanted to head to the early mentioned shoots in S.E. Ct. I might be willing to carpool with you.

That said. If someone were to come meet you to see about helping your process along, do you have a guest friendly, b.p. friendly, range to meet at?

I'd like to know more about this "Northeastern" in Goshen. When is "public" day, and who is not considered the "public"?
Where does one find out about all this? Back when I used to shoot 3d archery all over the state there were some great mailing lists one could get on to keep abreast of shoot dates, anything like that for muzzleloading in the northeast?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi CT Shooter! I know the feeling. I got lucky after a while and found some like minded folks at a local gun club in NE CT. We just got our Charter Club status. We are a long way off from you but i would be happy to talk with you and as i am a novice builder would love to admire the rifles you built. I do know some folks out your way who may be able to help, i will ask them. PM me anytime.

Where is your club in NE CT? Do you hold shoots? If so, please let me know cause I am always looking to go some place new to shoot and meet new people that like to shoot muzzleloaders.

For BP shooters to get together, there needs to be either a club range or private land to shoot on.
As long as someone is willing to allow shooting on their property then people can be recruited by invitation only.
From there people can decide whether they actually want to start an official club or not which involves creating by-laws and becoming an LLC, and
possibly establishing NMLRA affiliation.

I remember some guys in my city who started a hunting club. They had meetings for many years before they accumulated enough money to
buy land in NE CT.

Without private land to shoot on, it might require people joining an established shooting club with a range where they can get together for BP shooting as an approved gun club activity that's covered by their liability insurance and by the CT range protection law which grandfather in shooting ranges that were in existence prior to about 1990 when Rowland was Governor.
The problem in CT is that once a club tries to establish a new shooting range, it becomes subject to laws that allow it to be sued for being a noise nuisance and such.

It's fine for a few guys to get together and shoot on private property as long as there are no complaints.
But if you start getting too many guys making enough noise that could generate complaints from neighbors, then it can become a problem.
Then the state can come in and assess the lead contamination and/or noise issue and issue a cease and desist order or such.
These are modern times and things have changed in some places where people don't want to hear too much gunfire on a regular basis if
a neighboring property has become a new private range.

One of the best bets getting people to participate is to find a property where you can shoot at and then look for some guys who want to shoot together.
Then if the guys want to grow, they would need to decide how to proceed,
such as whether to join an existing shooting club together or not, to recruit new shooters to and to be able to invite the public if desired.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that there are very private clubs of people who shoot BP together.
I think that there's even one in my area.
But they are so private and exclusive that members of the public can't find them or shoot with them.
That's how they stay under the radar if they're not covered under the range protection law.
However, I think that the small club here is protected, but I don't think that they shoot very often or have many people shooting
on a regular enough basis to generate any complaints.

I guess the 1st question for CT Shooter is "Do you have a place to shoot?"
If not then one of the area shooting clubs needs to become a place where you can find other people to shoot with, or to invite them to shoot as a guest.

Otherwise activities would be limited to simple organizational meetings about where to shoot and how to recruit members or "participants".

Remember, 1/2 the problem now days is liability.
Who wants to accept liability for letting people shoot on their land?
Even some gun clubs don't want to invite the general public in for organized activities.
Each gun club is run differently.
Others simply have guests sign liability waivers.

We are in Woodstock. I will post here when we get it together to hold a shoot. We will be having some informal get togethers also if you are intetested.

Sharon Mountain is only interested in talking to you at one of the 2 events they hold, I asked if they had anyone that was willing to meet with and or educate someone new, I was told I'm welcome to come to an event.
I would prefer to be involved more then twice a year.

I have yet to actually meet anyone involved with Sharon Mountain, so I can't say what kind of people they are. If you have other contacts that are more welcoming, feel free to pass my information along.
After spending 3 1\2 years, mostly alone, going through surgeries and treatment to become a 2 time cancer survivor, it would be nice to spend time with people that share a common interest.

A "one man club" sort of defeats the goal of trying to increase participation in my area.
How about this, an active club that is sort of close , reaches out and offers to help bring their successful program to other local clubs, that would be a positive step in helping increase participation.

CTS:
Can't help you on Connecticut but The Ancient Ones of Maine would welcome you. Give us a google. It's worth the trek
