I’m starting over and I have questions. I guess mostly looking for comments to help me make a final choice. The only thing I thing I have in my mind is caliber. I think I want the .54 version of whatever I buy.
Flint or Percussuon?
Round ball(GPR)? Or
Conical ( Lyman Trade Rifle)?
I mentioned them because they seem to have quite a following. I’m open to all suggestions/opinions. This rifle will be used mostly to hunt whitetail for 10 days in Dec, here in Norther Michigan. Usually it is cold and wet here at that time. Thanks Guys

Precussion, round ball gun works well in poor weather and will shoot clean threw any white tail. You can make the quest harder but not better. Check our want ads.

Don't discount rifles with a 1/48 twist. They shoot round balls just fine. And the Investarms guns are shown to have .010 deep rifling. Good for RB loads.

This.
My Cabela's 54 cal is basically the same rifle as the Lyman Trade Rifle and it handles PRBs quite well. Prefers them to conicals actually but it does shoot the Hornady Great Plains bullet pretty well also.
Cap vs. flint is a personal choice. I have never owned a flintlock.

I went through this about a year ago. I settled on a percussion GPR in .54. I hunt deer and the occasional elk. I went with a PRB gun because I felt it was the most accurate for me. Shot placement is the most important, and if you put a round ball or conical in the lungs, dead deer.

Done in a few with a C.V.A. 54 mountain cap lock rifle 80grns. 3 f -.530 Hornady swaged round ball, 15 thousands linen patch lubed with my mixture of Crisco, bees wax and olive oil. Never recovered a ball shot clear through both lungs on most of them. Big blood trail and short trailing. If you do your part the 54 is deadly.
