US Model 1842 Musket - attic find

Bob Hoyt did the ream job on my smoothie. and i agree much info on that site. the bore on his '42 looks more like surface rust and should clean up well. of course there could be some pitting farther down.

US Model 1842 Musket - attic find

you're welcome. that .690 ball is for a reamed bore. yours will most likely shoot a smaller dia. ball. like a .680 or so. you will also have to play with the loads. some like heavier charges and they can beat on your cheek pretty good. i was surprised at the accuracy of the darn things, mine...

    Parker Hale 1853 Three Band

as a civil war skirmisher i have a first gen. p-h 3 band enfield and my son has a 2 band. these muskets are very accurate. and typical of military weapons, shoot about 8" high at 50 yards. we sent them out to a fellow skirmisher and have taller front sights installed. a filing and the enfields...

US Model 1842 Musket - attic find

Nice '42  i have one also. it is dated 1852 and i use it for cw skirmishing. bore is reamed to .695 so i use a .690 ball in her. i shoot 50 grs of 3fff kik powder and knurl the balls then lube. they slide right down the barrel. we can't use any patches for comp. shooting. mine has the cw...

    bare ball 12ga best shoting?

I shoot bare ball in an original 1842 springfield musket. .69 cal. i use a .690 ball by lee mould. 50 grs of kik 3fff. the bore is reamed five thousands over and is pretty accurate at 25 yards. this is the range we use in competition for civil war skirmishing. if you get over 60 grs in these...

Shooting my .62 smoothbore with a round ball and no patch

i agree, the guys i shoot with take care of their guns. most clean the weapons right after shooting for the day. i am about to buy an 1842 springfield[original] for skirmish shooting. i am amazed how accurate these guns are with bare ball. these are some knowledgeable guys to be around, they are...

    2-banders vs. musketoons/carbines

zip: the guy i bought the ph enfields from shot something like 24 deer with a two bander. he related one story where he hit the deer high and it ran off and bedded down. he trailed it aways and shot for the neck but hit just above the tail, sending the minie lenght ways through her. bullet came...

    2-banders vs. musketoons/carbines

i'm a cw skirmisher and shoot these guns. but not at 2-300 yards. drop would be substantial. of course you have the option of the elevated rear sight.we shoot off hand, from a bench with lots of practice shots could be made that far. i personally would not shoot at an animal that far away. my...

    Parker-Hale Enfield vs. the others

i agree with poordevil, my son and i shoot p-h enfields in fact we were shooting them yesterday. i also have an 1861 springfield replica made by armisport, that one can't hold a candle to the p-h guns. if you can buy the parkerhale rifles. as an aside, my frind has a euroarms enfield, it shoots...

    Noob questions - 1864 Springfield

use minie's in your musket for best results. again as stated above this has to be pure lead. get a mold or two, Lee makes three for the .58 cal. they are inexpensive and easy to use. start out around 40 grs of 3fff and work up to around 55 grs or so. 50 grs of 2ff can be good also. use rubbing...
