    Finally Drew A Tag

Drew a deer tag for this November 2-6th. So happy NM added an open sight requirement to the muzzleloader season, usually not much for anything that divides hunters, but I am guessing that a lot of guys didn't put in because they can't shoot with a scope. Plenty of time to work up a good hunting...

    RWS #11 Percussion Caps

Buffalo Arms Company has them in stock, they are spendy, but I have had great results with them.

    Routine when shooting

Shot the Hawken again today, 50 yard target, and I was not very good. I think I need to develop a shooting routine the same as I did with my Sharps. I noticed the same effects from wiping differently with the Hawken as I do with the other black powder rifle. I am going to try some powder...

    Dad's Hawken Round 3

Shot again today with the 50 cal Hawken, at least until the winds were 20mph sustained. The balls and bullets all hit the paper at 50 yards, biggest surprise was the first Maxi that hit pretty much at point of aim (6 O'clock hold on bullseye), shouldn't even have loaded the second Maxi as I...

    Getting Back In

This past Easter my Dad gave me his T/C Hawken 50 Cal, I have been working with it to try and recover the bore which is rusted and pitted and will shoot, after the holidays I am going to search for a drop in replacement barrel (have one I will buy if it's still available). This one is a 1:48, I...

Because I need another iron in the fire

So in addition to Dad's Hawken, I have pulled my old Civil War, Korean manufactured, replica in 58 caliber out and am trying to get it shooting as well. Just wondering what powder the 58 shooters here are using?

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

I spent most of my free time this week yrying to clean up the bore. It is pitted, and still has some serious carbon buildup near the chamber. I have been pretty aggressive in the cleaning, and still the patches are catching in 2 spots. I can shoot it, and it will group, but I have to keep...

    Going to cast some RB

I am in the process of cutting up some lead sheeting from an old Air Force radar shop I was able to scrounge years ago, it is pretty close to pure lead. I am going to drain my 20:1 I use for the Sharps 45 2.1" and my handguns, I give this soft lead a try with some 58 cal RB, a few 50 cal Lyman...

    Maxiball

Just for S&Gs, I am going to shoot some Maxiballs from the Hawken, I have the mold, so I thought why not try them. They weigh just under 370 grains, and I am going to try 70gr of FFFg. I will hopefully remember to take some pictures.

    Made Smoke

Finally shot the 1973 T/C Hawken today, first time in 8 years or so. Had my steel silhouette target sitting at 60 yards, after a sight adjustment, my load of 60grs FFFg put 3 .490 PRB in a 1 inch circle. Had a great time, and look forward to the next outing. Dave
