What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Yesturday I went to buy a .58 mold from a retiring shooter. Came away with three good quality locally made molds of different designs. $100.00 ๐Ÿ˜ Today I molded 50 of each.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went to the Club this morning having been off the air for nearly three weeks with the Flu. Not Covid, worse. Shot the Zouave for the first time since I had the rear sight replaced. 6" high at 50 mtrs. Wont be far off at 100. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Pick up the Zoli Zouave from Gunsmith. Had decided to improve the rear sight sight to something adjustable, more like the Enfield. Struggled with why an 1863 rifle would have worse sights than an 1861. Anyway..... Martini Cadet did the job. ๐Ÿ‘

    Guesstimate my muzzle velocity?

Absoluteley ๐Ÿ‘, 50 cal RB at 95 grns, I recon even a bit faster than 1300. Maybe 1450 fps. But how long does it hold that speed, not long. Unlike a 58 or 62 RB that comes out at 900, they keep on keeping on. ๐Ÿ‘

Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in rifle or hand gun ?

    I've been trialing hardness myself just recently. I've found 30:1 (sorry, I don't speak Brinell) to work well for everything. Apart from PRB in .50 cal and Hollow based .58 ( both 1% tin) I use 30:1. 38/50 1:12 twist, 40/65 1:16 twist, .375 M/L 1:16 twist. .40 M/L 1:16, .45 Gibbs 1:18 twist...

    Ignition while loading

I shoot with a guy who had one go off while ramming the projectile. Ram rod went through his hand, and the corrugated iron roof. Landed out on the Range. We must never push a Ram rod down with the palm of our hand. Now..... the rifle in question was a locally made rifle, and it was found to...

    wasting powder & caps

Here in Oz, we are paying from $165 - $185 for 1kg bottle of Swiss or Wano. I bought Magnum Caps a week ago @ $ 27.50 per 100. Consider that our Dollar gets about $0.63c U.S. We don't waste a thing over here any more. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ At the Range I double check that the bore is clean and dry with 1...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Well this morning I shot the new to me Zoli Zouave .58. She's an oldy and not prestine, Ram rod missing and some dents but all in all not used a lot. Was in a small collection for 15 years so I was a little concerned about the internal barrel condition. No problem there. I'd bought a Lyman 515...

How many muzzleloaders have you built

1 only. I did nothing more than buy all the bits and design what I wanted. My local BP man was a 2 year wait so I enlisted his Off sider who was doing a few, sometimes for him. Came out very neat. A 60 year old lady (at the time) from a wood carving Club agreed to do the carving. She had...

Today I tested .060" Gasket paper wads, against LDPE .060" . LDPE won hands down, but they were a few thou bigger, tighter. .079" v .082" in a .376 barrel. Tight is good. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I shot the .375 M/L today. It's 1: 16 twist. My efforts at PP are improving, learning all the time. Decent Paper (actually anything BP ) is very hard to come by here in Oz, especially different thicknesses so bullet size is critical. Have been lapping out a Lee bullet sizer (done it several...

.50 cal Lyman Great Plains Bullet Zero

A 6" PB ......... If the point of impact is 3" high at say 90 yds, and 3" low at 110 yds, then 100 yds is the 6" point blank. It may be 10" high at 50. Just sayin.
