Can powder brand be responsible for this much difference?

This does not involve either of the powders you are using but might offer something to ponder. Several years ago when GOEX was very difficult to find, I tried some Elephant black powder. It gave excellent results in terms of standard deviation in velocity but required around 15% more powder by...

Hardwood coals would probably be your better bet.

    Spear head load board

Nice looking rig. I would round the ends just in case? you never know when a hostile root or rock will ambush you.

Percussion Shooting Thru steel??? Is that possible...??

I bought a commercial .22 caliber swinger thinking it would be good for my .32 caliber flintlock. Metal was 1/16 inch thick. First five shots out of the .32 at .25 yards went completely through the metal. Best laid plans....

Problem with ignition on my new Hawken

Your comment on a "black and slimy" flintlock pan seems curious unless you are shooting in 99% humidity. You may be using too much moisture on your between shot swabs? Check your pan after swabbing and before loading. Your pan should be dry and grey to black.

    Loading stand

I have one for my flintlock pistol that is not that pretty. It has a curved spine that matches the curve of the pistol grip to make sure I do not stress the grip while loading. The curved portion is lined with felt to protect the finish on the pistol stock. Works great.

SOLD - Pending funds Kibler Woodsrunner 50 Cal.

I didn't think anyone knew where Burgess Junction was. Small wide spot if ever there was one.

    Elk calling

I use a mouth reed with a grunt tube. I can create bugles of different pitches, as well as mews and chirps. I use the bugles to locate a bull and then go to the bull. When I get in visual range, I usually set up in some trees or brush and convert to cow and calf calling to pull him in. Watch...

Odd results; bench vs. offhand shooting

Back in the old days when my eyes were much better I shot a wad of matches off hand and off of cross sticks. Ranges varied from 25 to 100 yards. I sighted both full stock flintlock rifles in off of a sandbag/bench setup with the muzzle end rested on the sandbag. I shot cross stick matches...

Short Barrel Rifles verses Long Barrel Rifles test. Details Below...

Velocity and distance to target both affect likely penetration. I have shot round ball and conicals out of my .58 caliber Hawken. The round ball leaves the barrel at a much higher velocity than the conical. The energy level shifts rapidly to the conical as you get farther away from the muzzle...

    Hawk Heads

Most forged hawks have a slight variance in the shape of the eye. Tap it on, remove it and then cautiously file away a little of the wood around the area compressed by the head. You can usually tap it on and it will generally stay put. If you throw it or use it to chop big wood and the head...

    Maximum speed with Black powder

I have exceeded 2000 fps in my .32 caliber flintlock. I have recorded just over 2000 fps with my .50 caliber flintlock but do not gain much velocity above that with additional charges. The increase in velocity per 10 grain increments begins to drop off beyond a certain point. Recoil also...

    Colorado State Muzzle Loading Association.

We see a lot of grey hair at events that we grew up enjoying. It seems that cell phones and social media will be the death of many activities we enjoy, as well as those with an historical base.

Most maxi type bullets are shot lubed without a patch wrapped around the bullet.

    High altitude hunting

I would be more concerned about the performance of my lungs and legs with a 10,000 foot elevation change. Oxygen gets harder to come by at that elevation.

    Advice on getting started crafting.

Some great suggestions above. You can also attend muzzleloading events in your area to see what shooters are using or possibly selling to get an idea of what you want your finished product to look like. I still have the first horn I made decades ago. It looks very stone aged compared to the...

    Flintlock coyotes?

for hunting, you might want to consider using the hottest load that gives you the best accuracy. Range will be a little less of an issue and even though they are coyotes, quick results are better results.

    First Flintlock hog

I checked out Spartan's website. It looks like they have some serious tuskers on their property. May have to fire up the Jeep. Thanks for the suggestion.
