    WANTED Flints

I Just bought 25 kilos of English black flint in lumps with a view to learning how to knap the stuff. I don't know how successful I will be though. Probably not very.

Shot the Philly Derringer today to check penetration.

Probably the same people make them all in Eibar, Spain. I think mine is Jukar but I have yet to build it. Just had a look, yep it's a Jukar.

    Loose Hammer on Percussion rifle.

The hammer on my percussion rifle is loose on the tumbler, or whatever the square post it fits on is called. Can I tighten it by peening the sides of the post with a center punch to expand it so as to make the hammer fit properly? Or should I put a bit of weld or silver solder on there and file...

    Might have a ball stuck...

I have done that with a percussion lock rifle. It doesn't take much powder at all to shoot the stuck ball out but it isn't going to go far. Of course it is easier with a percussion gun than a flintlock to get the small amount of powder you need in behind the ball.

Hide Glue is not an epoxy adhesive it is a heat activated collagen adhesive. I.e. you heat it in a double boiler until it is a semifluid liquid apply it and let it cool to harden. Epoxy adhesives work by a chemical reaction between the resin and the hardener. Hide Glue should however work in...

Shot the Philly Derringer today to check penetration.

I have a pair of antique Belgian screw barrel rifled percussion pocket pistols in about .44 cal I think. I have never shot them. That would be more than a little illegal here in the UK sadly, because I would love to shoot them along with my 5 barreled Mariette pepperbox, my original .44...

Epoxy resin didn't exist back then, but shellac did and could have thickeners added if needed to do the same job. Still it would Epoxy resin didn't exist then, but Shellac did and could be thickened if needed with wood dust etc., for use as a bedding material or used in solution with alcohol as...

    Safe powder horn making?

I have found that our ancestors did things the way they did and made things the way they did because they worked rather than looking good. OK sometimes they did both, but it was that they worked well that really mattered. The powder horn being a case in point. They do the job perfectly and they...

Is there a manufacturer of black powder ammo. Want to buy a original spencer rifle, but don’t want to reload rim fire cartridges.

I only just noticed this post. As far as I am aware there is no one currently loading large calibre rimfire ammunition but there is a possible source of easily reloaded cases that don't require playing around with highly sensitive priming compounds and old rimfire cases. The source is in...

    Why not a Kukri

Actually the retired Gurkha on the train did have his Kukuri and used it to great effect in taking out the armed bandits.
