    1858 Remington Navy .36

Worked out an old Euro Arms .36 Remington today. I fired over 40 rounds, with casual cleaning every few shots. The easily removable cylinder makes greasing and light cleaning as you go a snap. I tried some FFG rifle powder on a few shots and I couldn't tell the difference from FFFG. Good day at...

    Cap and ball revolver conversion

About a decade ago I bought the six cylinder firing pin conversion cylinder for my 1858 steel frame Remington repro for 80 bucks. I didn't like it so I bought the single firing pin and ballistic shield and loading gate type, this too was 80 bucks. The latter type had an ejection rod built into...

Lots of shots / no cleaning

I fired 40 rounds today out of my .50 cal Hawken this morning using the FFFG (Pyrodex P) powder. Conditions were poor here in South Carolina, chilly with a stiff wind, but you've got to get your time in when you can. The rifle performed flawlessly, no hang fires without cleaning. I fired about...

    Reading glasses for shooting

I put reading glasses on under my safety glasses and was able to hit my paper plate (9 inch) target, standing, unsupported, at one hundred yards again. The sights were clear but the target was slightly blurry. Seems like I'm the only side lock muzzle loader, though old, at my shooting club.

FFFG or Pyrodex P in rifles

I fired PRB and conicals in a .50 Cal Hawken using pistol powder. I had great results, back in the day we were advised against using FFFG or Pyrodex P in anything .50 cal and above.

    Greetings from South Carolina

I've been shooting black powder for over 30 years. I haven't been following trends for about 15 years, as I was busy with modern weapons. I bought an 1863 Remington replica rifle about 25 years ago for $280.00, now I see they're over $1000.00. It seems that powder and musket caps are hard to...

    CONNECTICUT VALLEY ARMS (CVA)

I bought a .50 cal Hawken style rifle about 25 years ago. It has a hollow plastic stock and it's front heavy. The lock is flimsy, but it still shoots to this day.
