Is a wad or patch necessary?

Hi all- Is a wad or patch necessary for shooting a smoothbore musket? Can you ram down a roundball directly on top of the powder charge?

    Modern matchlock reproductions

Anyone have any experience with modern matchlock reproductions? Ive seen some Indian manufactured versions for sale at a relatively reasonable price, but would be interested to know more about their overall quality and shootability. Thanks.

    Greetings from Upstate NY

New blackpowder shooter signing in from upstate NY. Got interested in muzzleloading from my interest in local history, in which flintlock muskets played an essential role. I finally ponied up for a used Pedersoli Brown Bess, and have been enjoying learning the art of muzzleloading.

Loading a repro Pedersoli Brown Bess

When shooting an 18th C. style paper cartridge, does the paper from the torn cartridge get rammed down the barrel as wadding on top of the main powder charge and ball, or between the main powder charge and the ball? I am brand-new to muzzleloading, and appreciate any advice. Thanks.
