Half Stock California Rifle from TOTW

I saw that rifle on track. Looks like a very nice rifle that should carry well. Let us know how it shoots.

    Gorning underhammer

Yep this is all just hacksaw, drill press and file work. We have a mill I could have put it on and cut it out with a lot less work. However I wanted to do one to show that yes this can be built with basic garage tools.

    Gorning underhammer

Basic hammer shaping done. Will do some finish shaping like radiuses yet but the overall form is done.

Next step in the hammer. Just used the drill press to hog out some of the waste then cut with the hacksaw. Now just clean it up to the layout lines with the files.

    Gorning underhammer

That's why I'm starting on this. It's just scrap bits of metal from under the bench at work. I can remake it and tweak the design as I go and not be out anything other than a few lunch breaks.

    Gorning underhammer

So this thread got me motivated and I started cutting a simplified hammer out inspired by the Gorning action. Still need to cut out the lower portion. To my eye the hammer is the most complicated part. This is just cut out of the side of a piece of scrap angle iron we had at work, 1/4 inch...

    Gorning underhammer

I have yet to pick up the newer underhammer book by Chandler only because it's kinda pricey. The one by Logan can be found pretty cheap on ebay.

    Gorning underhammer

This is a little book that details some very simple underhammers and talks about building them. https://www.amazon.com/Underhammer-Rifle-Techniques-Illustrations-Construction/dp/1655236792

    Gorning underhammer

In Logan's pictorial history of the underhammer gun there is an action that was made by a man by the name of Al woody. It shares a lot of similarities with the Gorning. Might be of interest to you.

    Gorning underhammer

I've been smitten with underhammers lately and have also been reading Robert's book. Had to grab my copy and look up the Gorning rifle. It appears to be a nery nice design. Been a decent amount of underhammer talk lately and I'm liking it.

    Ron Long underhammer

I appreciate the offer but I don't know if it would be workable on these yet. These are quite a bit different from the h&a type. I need to mock these up on a board or something and figure out the main spring geometry. I'm kinda assuming at this point that it's an external mainspring but not 100...

I have five sets of castings. I haven't decided if I really need all of them yet or not. Going to be a lot of just making stuff work on these actions as I have no information on how they are supposed to look when done.

    Ron Long underhammer

Yea in his later years he built a lot of hi walls and other black powder cartridge rifles. Earlier on he made locks and other parts for muzzleloaders. A heck of a craftsman and a nice guy, I was to his shop once.

I think they should build up into some very attractive rifles.

    Ron Long underhammer

Trying a long shot here. I recently was given some underhammer castings by a friend. My friend got them from Ron Long. My friend says he only saw one of these rifles that Long built and that was in the early 80s. I'm trying to find somebody who has one of these rifles to get an idea of the rest...

    Underhammer stuff

I recently pick up the Logan book and finished reading it last night. It does talk about Kendall some but your right in that there is nothing specific to the stud lock. There is a drawing of a Kendall lock though. There is also a drawing of a modern (1950s) double trigger action made by a man...

Oh interesting. I've looked at the Kendall design myself. Will be interested in if anyone has more information on them.

    Pecatonica Fusil; Novice Build

If I'm reading it right and your expecting a baby soon... I would probably farm out the barrel channel and ramrod hole just to save time. A new builder could spend a lot of time doing those two things. I got three boys and I don't get a darn thing done.

    Need info on lock

What about the Siler mountain lock? Would be closer to the right look and proven Siler guts.
