    capper for Pietta 1858

I use the Traditions one on mine. It almost works quite well, but there is a little modification you can do to make it work more smoothly. I went with the "Modify the cheapest part" method so I didn't want to make alterations to the gun. There is a thread here with the details...

    Remington Capguards

I see these every time I visit my local guy, but never knew what the purpose for them was exactly. Can they be slipped over a nipple for dry-firing practice? How do they stop the cap being blown off, I never did understand that part?

    Remington Capguards

If that doesn't work out for you my local guy has a couple of packets of them. I have no idea what he's asking though he is usually list+ on most things.

    Cartridges? Yeah I tried 'em once. . . . . . Didn't much care for them. :rotf:

Measuring a shot load by volume?

I actually do have most of a box of Buffalo Bullet Co. .440 round balls, so, in theory at least I can patch them as I usually use .454 & shave a circle. I also pre-lube the bore (I have to as I degrease the modern lube I store with, so the bore is dry if I don't) & I use felt lubed wads, maybe...

Measuring a shot load by volume?

That's actually a good point to bring up. :hatsoff: Not so much for me as this is probably going to be a one time deal with the shot I have on hand only, but for anyone else who sees this thread & uses the info for "snake loads" or whatever. I'm guessing I'll load 2 wads, one over the powder...

Measuring a shot load by volume?

For anyone else loco enough to try this the shot equivalent weight on a powder measure comes to a "25 Grain"(by volume) setting for a charge weight of 141 Gr(weighed) of actual #7 1/2 pellets.:youcrazy: Good point on the modern pellet hardness, I was kind of wondering about that, but the...

Measuring a shot load by volume?

I'm hoping for HOA (Hour of angle :stir: ) so I don't think I'll be horribly disappointed. It's just an experiment & assuming it actually puts some shot in something resembling a pattern I'll post the results when I get done. I'm kind of wondering how a non- saboted load in a (comparatively)...

Measuring a shot load by volume?

I weighed several period style conicals & came up with an average weight of 142GR. so that's what I'm aiming for. I've fired these with 28 Gr charges of FFFg & it seems well within the capacity of the pistol. Answers to your questions posed here. Yes I've done some shot in rifled barrels, &...

Measuring a shot load by volume?

OK I need to check my logic here so... I want to come up with a shot load equivalent to a .454 RB. Here's my clever(?) plan, can you find a hole in my logic. I plan to do 3~4 cycle to get good averages when setting up. 1. Weigh a .454 RB on my scale. 2. Put enough 7 1/2 shot, scrounged from a...

    '58 Remington chainfire, on TV.

Thinking back I saw (& helped) a "Union Officer" recently at the reenactment here in town. He was having trouble keep in a pair of Colts in his sash, the sash would loosen up & the guns would slip & then fall out. About the 3rd time this happened he calmly handed me both pistols to hold while he...

I sympathize, really I do. I agree too :cursing: :cursing: :cursing: I just tried to onward ship something that came to me in a USPS flat rate box. You know the ones that say: "A simpler way to ship! Flat rate shipping, if it fits it ships anywhere in the US or overseas for one flat rate."...

Can I form-mould a commercial Slim Jim holster?

It can be done I did mine. In the process I discovered a couple of things I'll pass on so you can profit by my mistakes. Depending on how the leather was tanned the soaking time may vary by a large amount. Traditionally tanned leather seems to take 15 minutes or so from what I'm...

    Using FFg in bp revolver

I've used Holy Black & one of the subs in FFg with no problems at all. 27~29 Gr seems to be the sweet spot for most of these. I did have a slight problem with one of the subs where the FFg grains were so big they wouldn't drop from one of my 2 measuring spouts. One won't handle them the other...

    '58 Remington chainfire, on TV.

Anyone else see this? Nat Geo was doing a show where 15 musket shooting Civil War reenactors were competing against a Gatling. To start the detail firing an "officer" fires his 58 Remington into the air (presumably with a blank.) if you look at the pistol as he fires it you can clearly see at...

    Beeswax Candles

I'm not sure how helpful, or not, this is going to be, but I noticed that churches who burn beeswax candles have a "brass collar" around the top of the candle. (I'm sure there is a correct term, but I don't know it.) These seem to be quite tall so that they create & trap a pool of hot liquid...
