Safe shooting distance for roundballs and steel targets?

You are correct to point out that the post could pose a splatter back hazard in theory. However my experience with shooting these target setups for the past 5 years and selling thousands of kits that use T posts indicates otherwise....so far

Safe shooting distance for roundballs and steel targets?

Steel with dents or craters will ALWAYS spit back bullets and should NEVER be used as targets. Velocities should never be below 750 fps or bullets will bounce. Always use good quality AR500 steel plates should have a downward angle like these targets from HANG FAST TARGETS

    Bullet trap

If you hung those tires on a post with the plate in the middle (see pics above) it would catch all the lead without the sand.... just scoop it up, no sifting necessary. A tire that size would catch ALL the lead. Keep it simple and light.

    Bullet trap

This tire setup catches almost 100% of the lead splatter. I recycle it into cast bullets. Easy to hang on a single T Post. The hanger kit for this rig is available from Hang Fast Targets.

    GPR lock

Coming back from the Dark Side is going to be a transition. This is the level of accuracy I was working with before with a "gasp" modern muzzleloader. But hey, I'm trying. I sold the Knight Long Range Hunter to buy the GPR.

    GPR lock

I've been a precision shooter too long I guess. I am going to give it a good working out with the original lock to break in the barrel and work the load out before I buy the new lock. Besides that I need a new lyman 57 GPR receiver sight before I spend money on a lock anyway. First things...

    GPR lock

It is functioning the way it's supposed to. The lock is clean and lubed but I was looking for a faster lock. The folks at L&R explained that their lock has LESS sear to fly contact than the GPR lock and has a FASTER (traditional) leaf spring... which is what I was looking for. Sure the stock...

    GPR lock

I talked to the fine folks at L&R Lock Co. today and they told me they had redesigned their lock to minimize sear to fly contact. They explained that the coil spring in the GPR factory lock would lose power as it fell making sear/fly contact more of an issue that it would be with the stronger...

    Lyman GPR questions

Zonie answered this question a few posts back. There is a 1/8" hole in the back of the hooked breech plug that was used for tooling. It seems to be a blind hole and it was filled with some soft clay like material.

    Lyman GPR questions

Dutch; I received your packet a while back and have read it twice so far. I can't wait for the weather to break and to try your system out. I've always believed that bore condition is the most important aspect to accuracy. I didn't mean to refer to the tang in my earlier post about the...

    GPR lock

Nice wall !! My wife and I have been competing too for the last 30 years (mostly me lately) in several disciplines (not muzzleloading) so I definitely see the commitment. Every gun I compete with has to be tuned from factory specs to perform in competition so when I examined the...

    GPR lock

Maybe I should try to understand some of the history behind these mechanisms then.... Question: When was the double set trigger as is represented in the GPR first used? Was the design exactly the same then as it is now? If Im going to go traditional I certainly want to do it correctly. I...

    GPR lock

While I have always had an interest in muzzleloaders and have owned many including inlines, my main focus is long range precision shooting. The same principles of marksmanship and proper equipment apply throughout all shooting disciplines. In the long range game lock time is measured in...

    GPR lock

I would certainly never remove the fly for obvious reasons but I do not accept a viable solution is out of the question. I've been gunsmithing for almost 50 years so I'll just figure it out myself. If I can improve the lock I will post my results.

    GPR lock

As the hammer is lowered the sear nose bumps the fly unless the trigger is pulled HARD. During normal firing I'm sure the sear will bump the fly as the hammer falls creating a hesitation and possibly slowing the hammer slightly. The slower the lock time (in any firearm) the more it affects...

    GPR lock

Thanks for the clarification. Few more questions: Is the hammer designed to bump the fly when being fired? Is there a way to adjust this contact out? Do the aftermarket locks have the same problem?

    GPR lock

I just purchased a GPR in .54 caliber and after taking it apart to inspect and clean I noticed that the hammer would bump on something in the lock after the trigger was pulled about halfway down. I believe its hitting on the little "dog" that allows the hammer to be lowered after it's cocked...

    Lyman GPR questions

Can anyone tell me what the hole in the tang is for. The one in my rifle looks like someone filled it with epoxy. I'm digging it out now and it's very soft like clay or something.

    Lyman GPR questions

Lock replacement was going to be my next question. Good to hear the GPR lock is up to snuff.

    Lyman GPR questions

Are you talking about the Lyman #57GPR receiver sight? I was planning on using this one
