    Slugging a bore?

Not sure where this should go, but what is the safest way to slug a bore in a ML? (Assuming the breech plug can't be pulled.)

    Researching 3 ML's I forgot I had

According to the guy I got this from it was originally bought at a barn sale in Tuscarawas County around 20-30(?) years ago. Never got far from home.....

    Researching 3 ML's I forgot I had

Further research on another ML from the back of my closet..... 53” overall, Barrel 38” Barrel diameter: Land to land app. .295. Groove depth app. .005. 5 groove saw cut rifling. (~.30 cal? Is this unusual?) The barrel is octogon and tapered from .875 to .790. It has a silver front and fixed...

Thread Pitch ??? Do you mean the TPI of the rifiling? The four guide holes don't appear to be threaded

    Researching 3 ML's I forgot I had

This have been hiding in the back of my closet for years and I have decided to see if I can get it working. It is some sort of a bench target rifle. It is was made with a false muzzle which, unfortunately, I don't have. It is a mule ear (side hammer) with a land to land bore of .363. The 30"...

    P1853 Enfield Smoothbore

All the above plus a lot of surplus Civil War era rifled muskets were "smoothbored" after the war to make them more palatable to folks migrating West. (A "shotgun" was deemed a more useful general purpose gun than a rifle.) I have a M1863 Springfield that has suffered the same fate. (And it make...

    Silver Solder

That's what I figured. I may just solder in the stud and leave the cup unhardened. If it starts to get battered I can always make another one.

    Silver Solder

Zonie, Tnx for getting back to me. I've finally got the percussion cup made for the sidehammer I'm restoring. I turned it out of a mild steel bar from Brownells. I need to silver solder a threaded stud into it and also wanted to case harden it with Kasenit. I was afraid if I soldered first, the...

    Silver Solder

Should a percussion hammer cup (nose) be hardened? Second question, will silver solder work on a case hardened part? Dean

    Cap Locks, Usual or Unusual?

I think there may be a little confusion here. The Miller lock is the side hammer and the rifle does not have a set trigger. The hammer itself has three notches. One half-cock and two firing notches. Of the two firing notches, one has a medium trigger pull and the other a light trigger pull. It...

    Cap Locks, Usual or Unusual?

No, the triggers are functioning as designed. The rear trigger does nothing except set the front trigger. The adjustment screw can be turned to where the front trigger won't set. I will pull the trigger plate and post some pictures of the mechanics. Dean

    Cap Locks, Usual or Unusual?

Several years ago I came into a percussion rifle that I figured was a “squirrel rifle” because of its small caliber (

    7 x 32 thread

I did measure at the root of the thread. (The un-threaded portion at the the point closest to the cup itsself.) This should give me a pretty close approximation of what the actual thread diameter should be without wear.

    7 x 32 thread

Alex, I may just take you up on that but I'm not discouraged locally yet. Here's another part I would really like to have. (The one that fits in the holes.) I understand that this is a part that can't be duplicated. Dean

    7 x 32 thread

Either that, or a whole lot older. :blah: Actually mine is called "Machinist's Practical Guide" and was copyrighted 1929 and revised in 1963.

    7 x 32 thread

OK, This thread has gotten enough traffic that I should try to explain what it is I’m trying to do. Here are a couple of views of the hammer on the rifle I’m trying to restore: As you can see there is a small problem with the cup. Luckily it is removable; Here is the part I need to...

    7 x 32 thread

It's on an original 1840-50's New York percussion rifle I'm working on. 8-32 is too big and 6-32 is too small and I doubt it's metric from that early on. I may end up having to retap the hole to 8-32, but I hate to change it from original. Dean

    7 x 32 thread

Anybody know where I could get about 2 or 3 inches of threaded steel rod in 7 x 32?? (Or should I use this as an excuse to get a lathe? Dean

    Tapered nipple?
