Snaphaunce Lock Build

I must have missed something here? Who is the maker of these parts? Are they redily available?

    Iron Furniture on a Hawken

Rocky Mountain rifles, including Hawkens had iron furniture. I suppose a few had brass, but not typical. Of course, if you are making a fun shooter, it doesn't matter. Make it look the way you want. Have fun.

    Lock Finish on Original Guns

Case-hardening can cause warping - which might make the parts not fit as before. Don't rush into this.

    Snaphaunce Indentification

The interior of the lock looks almost exactly like the "English" snaphaunce lock I just built from parts from The Rifle Shoppe. Clicky I think it is a lock made to shoot at some time in the past. What happened to it after that, is conjecture as ably outlined by the knowledgeable folks above...

    Finish on cast parts?

Whatever you do, don't use a power buffing wheel. Do it by hand with abrasives. Very fine grits of abrasive paper are available at auto supply stores in the painting department.

Metal finish for a 1600's snaphaunce pistol?

The wait time was very long, as their reputation suggests. You can't rush those folks. After all was said and done, it was very much worth it however. The quality is great, and they do stand behind their stuff 100% in my experience. The stock was semi-inletted and took about as much work as you...

Metal finish for a 1600's snaphaunce pistol?

That's exactly how this lock works. When the pan-cover is open and the cock is down, the cover can be closed because the operating rod is now riding over the pan cover arm.

    urine soaked cord???

When we were kids we made fuses by soaking cotton string in saltpeter solution. Hmmm... I have a few beers in the fridge...I wonder :hmm:

Metal finish for a 1600's snaphaunce pistol?

I think I fixed the password issue. You should be able to see the pictures fine with no password now. Thanks for the feedback. Brian http://homepage.mac.com/briankatz/PhotoAlbum2.html

Metal finish for a 1600's snaphaunce pistol?

I am finishing up a snaphaunce pistol from TRS parts and am in the process of browning the barrel, lock plate, pan, cock and thimble - as well as screw heads. Is this an acceptable historically correct finish for this time-period piece? I had it in the white, (The other parts are left in the...

    Wheellock Plans

I almost finished a wheel lock from Lauber's plans back in the late 70's. I used hand tools plus a drill press. Yes, it did turn out very machine-like, and perhaps that's why I never went back to it to finish it.I still might, someday. I built a wheelock ritter pistol from The Rifle Shoppe parts...

Who sells the best Colt Paterson?

I'm thinking about a Paterson Colt revolver, and am wondering what you folks think about the quality of the various offerings? My main interest is historical accuracy, not shooting. Any help appreciated.

Building a Hawken pistol, advice needed

I am just starting to build a Hawken half-stock percussion pistol from TOW parts. I have built a few MLs in the past, even a wheel lock. But, I have a lot of questions about the details of the Hawken construction that aren't clear in the TOW plan. I want to do as authentic a job as possible. For...
