    Lyman GPR or Traditions...Penn?

I owned a Lyman .54 GPR in percussion. It was the best factory rifle I ever had and fun to shoot, accurate, and easy to load and clean with its deep groove rifling. I have never shot a Traditions. Good luck with whatever you choose. - John

    Wedge plate screw holes stripped

I suggest removing the other screw to check the size. Go up one size on your drill bit and drill it out for a larger screw. Good luck - John

    50 cal. Hawken

I have had two Lyman's by Investarm, a GPR in .54 and a Trade Rifle in .50. I thoroughly enjoyed them both. I especially like the deep rifling, .010" in .50 cal. They were both attractive rifles and good shooters. I doubt that you will be disappointed - John

    Browning

I agree with Ames. I use Dixie cold brown and I swear by it. It gives a great looking deep brown color. You can hang it over a bucket of water if the humidity is really low - John

Has anyone built a kit from Jedediah Starr?

I should also add TVM and Tennessee Valley Manufacturing (Jack Garner) to the last group. I should also add that Jack Garner makes most of his own components as well as his own stocks. I believe the others buy from Pecatonica. All of these businesses supply quality components that need a lot...

Has anyone built a kit from Jedediah Starr?

It all depends on what you want to accomplish. If you just want a shootable rifle that you can do by yourself, then get a Traditions, Lyman, Dixie, etc. If you want an authentically styled rifle that is still fairly simple to build and you don't care about the period, then get a Kibler. If...

A friendly word on buying a ML

I understand your frustration. Check online for the nearest event you can find. If you are shopping for a ML it would be worth taking a vacation day to stretch a weekend and go. Good luck - John

If you could change one thing about muzzleloading...

It does matter to many of us. There is something depressing about seeing our ML brethren being treated like prospective criminals :td: . We are with you in spirit. The problem is the rest of us don't see any way we can influence opinions in other lands :idunno: . We can only sympathize and...

A friendly word on buying a ML

I have seen a number of posts recently on buying a first ml or upgrading to something better, typical forum topics. Most people on the forum already know what I'm about to say. This is for the newcomers. I recently attended a ml gun show and a traders fair. I was impressed at each event...

    English style rifles

I read somewhere, I believe it was Hanson, that English rifles were popular in the Great Lakes trade in the early nineteenth century. I would imagine that some of those would have ended up in American hands. I'm sure that English rifles were introduced in Canada early in the trade and I do not...

    TOTW Lancaster kit

I have spent much time looking over the kits from Jim Chambers, Track, and Pecatonica. They all have high reputations. When you consider all the work that is already done, that the barrels are all either swamped or tapered octagon to round, and that the stock is curly maple rather than plain...

Thank you, Dave. That is fine work. Do you have a website? That rifle would do any maker proud. - John

    .50 Dixie Tennessee

I believe you are right about it being a match rifle. I think that is why Turner Kirkland went with the 15/16 barrel instead of the lighter 7/8. He wanted it to be a competitive match rifle. Every time a rifle is fired there is a certain amount of "flex" to the barrel which affects accuracy...
