Pros: Easy to build, minimal tools required.
Cons: Some screws should be replaced with higher quality to avoid breakage.

The Great Plains Rifle Kit was easy to build. I put one together in .54 caliber flintlock. The stock comes pre-inlet for all of the parts. All you have to do is file/sand the wood flush with the parts. There is plenty of wood on the stock to shape as you like. The parts were not very rough and easy to finish.
The only problem I had was with the escutcheon screws. They are so small and brittle I broke one off. You can avoid this by putting some soap or wax on the screw threads before installing. I recommend getting some slightly larger, stronger screws.
Overall it was a great peoject that only took about 20 hours to complete.

Pros: A good kit for a first time builder
Cons: The escutcheon screws break off too easy

The Lyman GPR was the first black powder gun I ever built. The stock has enough wood on it that I was able to shape it more to my liking. The gun is a great shooter and fun to boot!

Pros: very easy to build, and shoots VERY WELL
Cons: Some factory inletting issues

Baught a kit, had to do some major work on the tang area, do to improper tang inletting / alignment, BUT, with a bit of epoxy, and sawdust, and some inletting "Bluing" I was able to straighten it right out, (with a bit of work). Yes I could have sent the stock back, but I had alreadu had quite a few hours into it, so I desided to "Do it myself" and fix the problem. After some many, many hours on the range, I worked out all the bugs, and now it shoots about a
2 1/2 to 3 inch group at 100yrds. I would like to thank all of those who gave me some tips (from the builders work bench section)for all of your help!!!! I now have a quality BP rifle, and will NEVER go back to shooting an in-line, theres no challenge, or sport to them things, Over all I am very saticfied will my Lyman GPR 54cal.

Pros: Great starter kit with quality parts for a Hawken style rifle.
Cons: Wood used is unusual and the grain is not consistant - can be tricky to get a good finish.

Lyman has a great product here which can be customized for an even more traditional look. They leave a lot of extra wood to work with and inlet the parts a bit too deep to allow for it. Keep that in mind when final shaping to avoid having to fill behind the escutcheons to bring them to the same level as the wood. The screws provided are ok but care should be taken in using the smallest ones and they should be waxed before screwing into the small predrilled holes to prevent breaking. The tang can be straightened to avoid being inlet to deeply in the wrist. Lyman shapes their stock with a lot of belly both in the forearm and toe area. All in all I would say this is the best production kit I've seen of an authentic styled rifle and gives the builder a lot of opportunity to get creative with their skills.

Pros: Great Kit for us beginners
Cons: Lock

I did not like the lock but added an L & R lock. It is really a nice gun. You cannot expect Lyman to put a 100+ dollar lock in a $300 kit. Best deal out there.

Pros: Great Price for a great sturdy rifle
Cons: Had to heat and bend the hammer to align with nipple

After building 3 other muzzleloaders, I found the Lyman to be the best kit I had worked with. Once completed and compared to my other rifle (a .50 CVA Hawken), I have had a hard time picking up the Hawken. The Lyman GPR is such a great, sturdy, long, accurate rifle that I have no desire to shoot the others. Well....almost!!

Pros: great inletting , easy for a beginner to finish , exceeded expectations for accuracy .
Cons: The rear sight was too loose to use ( dovetail fit ) but the buckhorn style ( also supplied with kit ) fit perfect . Also there is some white in the wood but thats just cosmetic .

I spent some time ( a few hours ) getting to know this gun , tried different patches & worked up a good load , 55 gr of triple 7 , .015 lubed patch .530 speer lead ball hits at exact point of aim out to 60 yrds . Same load with double charge ( I worked up to 120 gr and 110 was the most accurate ) hits right on at 100 yards. I took it to my first club shoot last weekend ( 3rd time I have shot the gun ) and took second place , splitting a playing card from about 25 yards among other shots . If I could reload faster ( significantly faster ) I would have taken first . I like this gun so much I HAD to order the pistol to match .
The gentleman I just bought my squirrel gun from told me he has over 20 frontstuffers in his collection , several of them custom made , but when he is hunting it always his GPR .54 lyman that he takes . ..... .....
I wish they made a squirrel gun .

Pros: Very easy to build
Cons:

The wife bought me the .54 GPR flint kit, while we were staying in our RV waiting for the house to sell. With only a picnic table to work on a couple of files, some steel wool and a ton of sandpaper, the kit came together very well. I used LMF to brown the metal. Turned on all the hot water in the RV's bathroom to get it nice and steamy. Then hang up the metal parts and let them rust. It gave me a nice brown finish. I put eight coats of boiled linseed oil on the stock. In all, it took me about three weeks, due to a lot of bad weather. I installed the primitive rear sight, but you have to peen the bottom of the sight to get a tight fit. I also drilled the vent liner to 5/64" to get positive ignition. She is a straight shooter that can plant them in the X-ring at 100 yards. It's my number 1 hunting rifle.

Pros: very good kit easy first time build
Cons:

This was my first build. I have carried it hunting for about 10 years and have harvested several deer. It is a very reliable accurate rifle. Lyman did a good job of keeping the kit true to the originals which is also important to me.
