    It could be a long shot but as a part time blacksmith I have seen a lot of similar "touch marks" do a Google search, there are a lot of touch mark registries...you might get lucky. My guess is that it's the previous owners name.

    I have often wondered about a reason why this was done (if at all) back when? I have no proof either way but do work with wood and iron in traditional manners a lot. We take for granted simple things like sandpaper in today's modern world. Burnishing and boning wood is a way to make it smooth...

    Well my wife calls what I wear antique cuz it hasn't changed in 40 years :grin: I go out with PC clothes in the early seasons, it's a lot of fun, but when it gets cold I go back to what I know works for me. We don't buy store bought meat, hunting is for filling our freezers. All wool for me...
