I started shooting smokepoles at age 6. Seems hard to believe but that was 50 years ago. My father built rifles in the 1950's because there was no such thing as a factory-built muzzleloader. Most were in the classic Pennsylvania style. Many, if not most, of his rifles were patterned after those of maker Jacob Dickert. There were a few Hawken style plains rifles in there too. Over the years I just never saw the need for anything more modern for hunting. (I do admit to a liking for Sharps single-shots.) I'm a gunsmith and as such I work on all firearms but I don't own a centerfire rifle.
