    Band saw size/strength?

Thank you everyone for your insight. Everyone answered the questions and reservations I had about those bench top saws, so that's safely out of my mind. I was interested in how many recommended a jig saw, or a hand saw. Should I pass on a bandsaw, at least in the mean time until I work out...

    Band saw size/strength?

I've been gathering information, parts, tools, creating my workspace, though what has been eluding me is a reasonably priced bandsaw. I want to start a build from a blank, and don't know anyone with a wood shop I could bug to let me cut. Does anyone have any thoughts on the minimum size of a...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

I guess still being young and foolish, I might just go with the straight octagon and not worry about the weight, because I'm strong enough to carry it around, right??? I won't get tired, right??? As Birddog said, if I just wanted another rifle, I'd go buy one. I'm doing this to learn to build...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

With this being my first build, there is an intimidation factor with inletting a swamped barrel, though like anything else, with patience and care, it will all come out well. I was worried about the weight of a straight octagon barrel at that length, and your replies seem to justify the concern.

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

Another question and I can't find any previous posts on it, but as far as barrel thickness, does anyone have a specific preference? I was thinking of going with a 7/8" .50 caliber barrel for no reason other than many folks I've read or talked to have gone that size. Seems more common. Just...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

I'm gonna fiddle with photobucket once I have something decent to post. Thanks for the advice. I'm ordering my barrel tonight or tomorrow and decided I'm gonna give the dovetails a shot but will let them install the breech plug. As for moving on, I've been trying to find a decent used...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

Thanks for all the advice so far. Moving along a bit, I purchased a stock blank from Dunlap and got an email that says it's been delivered. Now for the barrel, and I'm thinking Green Mountain, straight octagon, 7/8th. To get just a parts list idea, I'm following the kit parts list from TOW...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

Again, thanks to everyone who's offered up advice. I've been pouring over info as much as I could for what seems the past few years as I've been gathering everything I need, as well as cash to get this started. To start, as mentioned, I don't need everything, but would lock, stock and barrel...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

I think I should have clarified that I'm in no way delusional enough to think I'll be able to recreate a rifle of those qualities on the first time out, let alone the 50th time out. I'm only narrowing in on those styles I mentioned because of various qualities I like. I know mine will be much...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

Thanks Testa for your input. I had plans to buy one of those TOW plans this week. Been looking at those for quite a while and was working on settling on one of the two rifles I had my eye on. Being $250 in, where did you cut the costs the most? I do have my hands on a copy of Recreating...

Beginner's first build in the planning stages

No better way to learn than by people who have experience already. So I'm here to ask for advice, listen (virtually), take in any info you can offer up for my first rifle build. I've been wanting to build a rifle for a long time since my dad told me he built his from a kit my mom bought him...
