    finally got me a smoothie

Came across a deal i just couldn't pass up, a 12 gauge CVA double barrel kit still in the plastic wrapping, for the massive sum of $75. Needless to say I couldn't hand my money to the guy fast enough. Can't wait to get her built and see what she'll do. Think I'll name her "Double Trouble"

    Barrel Twist Rate

I can't speak to how many times my dad fired it before I came along, but myself I've put a couple boxes of store bought balls through it. Since I started casting I've put more than a few of my hand cast ones through it. My usual target shooting is at 100yds and it does fine at that range...

    Barrel Twist Rate

My mom actually purchased the flintlock rifle kit and two pistol kits for him not long after they got married in 1972, she bought it at a store called GEMCO. Unfortunately he doesn't have the original box it came in, the only manual of any kind that he had for it was the little black book from...

    Barrel Twist Rate

I've checked it with a cleaning rod and tight jag/patch. the rod will make 2 1/2 turns going from the muzzle to the breech. since the barrel is 33 1/2" I figure it to be somewhere around 1-13" twist rate.

    Barrel Twist Rate

Yes, I have one with a fast twist like that. My dad built it from a kit way back in the early 70's. Shoots just fine with patched ball, or 285 grain buffalo bullets.

    Cast ball hardness comparisons

I have experienced no difference in accuracy between pure lead and wheel weight lead. depending how tight of fit you normally shoot, you will have to adjust your patch thickness or you will have a heck of a time getting it down the bore, if at all.

    Absinthe

yes, absinthe is legal here. you can buy it from many liquor retail stores like Bevmo, DrinkupNy, and a few others. there are a few brands that are actually pretty good depending on your taste. La Fee, Kubler, and "Pacifique" are some of my favorite, they're a bit pricey, but when it comes to...

    200yd holdover?

to the OP. with my rifle sighted dead on for 100 yards, I moved on to the 200 yard target. i found that it hit 17" low when aiming dead on with no hold over. this was with my 50 cal. CVA Hawken loaded with 50gr FFFg Goex Bp, .490rb, and .018" walmart pillow ticking patch lubed with just plain...

    Burst Barrel

in one of the pictures, I see a short discolored section of the split, maybe 6-8 inches rearward from the muzzle. looks to me like a crack that started from a previously short started ball? it looks nice and dark compared to the rest of the split, i.e. powder residue from pressure leakage? :2

    Hand cast

+1 I had pretty much the same experience with Hornady and Speer roundballs. I couldn't figure out why I was getting the occasional flier, so I measured a box. What I found was some balls were way out of round by close to .020" and that's when I decided to cast my own. Picked up a Lee mold for...

.50 cal PRB vs Bullet impact point

the best advice I can give you is: go to the range and shoot some of said bullets and see where they are hitting. they may be surprisingly close to the same POI, though you might have to adjust your powder charge a bit. :2
