    CVA hawken flintlock

I own 2 caplock CVA Hawken rifles and had to have my gunsmith lessen the spring tension on one of the rifle's hammer. As far as a "soft frizzen" goes... a frizzen is easily "hardened" by any competent gunsmith... no biggie and not expensive either. I've found the cost of the older CVAs is...

need help choosing my next rifle

*********************************************** I agree with Snakebite! The wood on the rifle you currently have is absolutely beautiful... I can't see how you'd improve on that rifle except that you want a brass patch-box... and I, too, prefer a brass patch-box to a wooden one. If it were...

    CVA Hawken Loading Issues

I have 2 older .50 caliber CVA Hawken rifles... and it sounds to me like your rifle may have a "tight" bore. However, here are my 4 suggestions to "cure" your problem. I'd do 4 things: 1) I'd use a thinner patch... maybe a .010 to .012 inch cotton or cotton denim patch thickness and lube it...

    short barrel flintlock

My deer hunting muzzle-loader is an older .50 caliber CVA caplock with a 24-inch barrel which makes it very handy in the woods and weighs only 6.5 pounds. However, I would think your flintlock rifle would shoot the same load with equal accuracy as my caplock. I know my flintlock rifle also...

    Traditions Kentucky Rifle Quality?

************************************************ I bought a flintlock Traditions "Shenandoah" (33.5 inch barrel) Pennsylvania Long Rifle rifle about 7 years ago and have shot several hundred rounds through the rifle since then. The good things: 1) The Spanish-made rifle has a very accurate...

Obturation of a patched round ball...real or imagined?

******************************************* I agree with Fred 100%... That said, one must realize that in order to perform "total obturation", the obturation of a black powder, muzzle-loader's patched, lead ball is totally dependent on a tight-fit, patch-to- bore, to keep the powder's gases...

New shooter w/ a new gun

Ryan... All three of my .50 caliber rifles (1 flintlock Long Rifle + 2 older CVA percussion cap Hawkens) are very accurate using 47 grains of FFFg Swiss black powder behind a Hornady swaged round, patched ball. Last year, I just began checking out the same load using Goex rather than Swiss due...

    A Squirrel rifle

I don't have a "squirrel rifle", but when I eventually get one, it will probably be a percussion-cap Hawken in .36 caliber with a 28-inch barrel. But any squirrel rifle I buy will have to be in .36 caliber. Not sure what brand of rifle it will be... depends a lot on the quality of the rifle...

    Traditions Flintlock?

I "fixed" that "Roman Nose" Tradition's stock on my Tradition's Shenandoah (33-inch barrel) Long Rifle... I got tired of having to struggle to get my cheek "down" far enough onto that Roman Nose stock's high-comb in order to align the sights and soooo, I took a rasp and some high-grit sandpaper...

    patch, bullet lube

I use a mixture of bee's wax and liquid Crisco Vegetable Oil, but I can't tell you the ratio. I merely melt the bee's wax down and add the Crisco and allow it to cool and "cake" up again. If the "cake" is too hard, I re-melt it and add a little more Crisco Oil and repeat letting it "cake-up"...

how much 3F for .50 cal

My very accurate hunting load (for deer) in my older, .50 caliber, caplock CVA Hawken Hunter-Carbine (24" barrel/6½ lbs) is 70 grains of Swiss Black Powder behind a .490" Hornady swagged rifle ball with a .016" denim patch cut at the barrel lubed with a mixture of bee's wax and liquid Crisco...

how much 3F for .50 cal

All 3 of my .50 caliber rifles... 2 Hawken cap-locks and a flinter Long Rifle all like 47 grains of FFFg real black powder (either Swiss or Goex) for target shooting and my older CVA cap-lock Hawken-Hunter Carbine (24" barrel, 6½ lbs) likes 70 grains of FFFg Swiss Black Powder. Both of these...

    birthday rifle

Yeah... like Alden said, you "stole" that rifle, so where's your mask and your gun? :haha:  Seriously, you're got TWO "keepers"... your terrific wife and that nice rifle! Strength and Honor... Ron T.

    Percussion or Flint

I have both flintlocks and caplocks... but mostly shoot my caplocks because their barrels can be removed from the stock by removing the wedge that holds the barrels in the stocks. Making the barrel easily removable makes for a much easier cleaning job after shooting the rifles. That said...

    Percussion or Flintlock?

I did a "quick read" of the other's posts here to make sure I wasn't repeating what has already been written and what I'm gonna mention hasn't been mentioned prior to this post (as far as I can tell)... so here goes: I have 2 older CVA Hawken caplocks (percussion cap rifles) plus a flint-lock...
